Ford Motor Company designed, manufactured and sold certain of its model 2017 and newer vehicles equipped with a defective 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
A group of Ford vehicle owners argue the automaker either knew or should have known the vehicles allegedly contained one or more design and/or manufacturing defects, including with their 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions.
Vehicle owners argue the alleged transmission defect caused the vehicles — including model year 2017 and newer Ford Expeditions, Mustangs, Rangers, F-150s, and Lincoln Navigators — to jerk, lunge, clunk, and hesitate between gears.
“Drivers need a properly functioning automatic transmission in order to safely and reliably accelerate and decelerate their Vehicles,” the Ford class action states. “A common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford’s 10R80 transmissions is a potentially life-threatening safety issue.”
Vehicle owners want to represent a nationwide class and an Alabama subclass of consumers who are current or former owners or lessees of one or more Ford vehicles equipped with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.
Ford refuses to recall or replace allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, says class action
Vehicle owners argue Ford failed to disclose the alleged defect to consumers, and has refused to recall or replace the allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, but, instead, “merely states that the abrupt and harsh shifting is normal.”
“An auto manufacturer that is aware of dangerous design defects that cause its vehicles to jerk, hesitate, surge, or slip gears must promptly disclose and remedy such defects,” the Ford class action states.
Vehicle owners claim Ford is guilty of fraud, unjust enrichment, negligence, and fraudulent concealment, among other things, and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Alabama Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, punitive, and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.
A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Ford earlier this month by a group of vehicle owners arguing the automaker manufactured certain of its model 2016 and newer vehicles with defective Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost engines.

Have a 2020 f150 sport with the 10- speed transmission. Bangs in to gear, downshifts at almost a stop all the time. Brought it to the dealership, said the same thing.. just needed to update the computer.. transmission still terrible
I bought a 2017 F-150 new with 3.5L and 10R80, FX4 pkg, etc. in April 2017. I have 78k miles on it with zero issues. It is a great truck and gets excellent fuel economy. Ford did, however, cause a problem with a cam phaser “upgrade”. My cam phasers were fine, but an upgrade is good, right? I immediately lost over 2mpg along with a now sluggishly responding engine. I immediately went back to my dealer demanding a return to original. They said they didn’t have the program to do it. Some months later I received a letter from Ford saying they discovered that some vehicles would be returned to original. I managed to get m truck back to original and everything then worked as before. My current summer mpg is 23.5 so I will drive this truck until it is dead.
Have same jerking and hesitation issues with 2018 F150 with this transmission
I have a f-150 6 speed transmission 3.5 l ecoboost ford recalled all vehicles up til October 2013 mine was build November 2013 with the same defect then the recalled vehicles ford is refusing to fix the problem
I have a 2020 Ford Mustang GT with less than 30k miles and it has the clunky shifting, jerking, hesitating when going from forward to reverse, etc. as everybody else is having. It has been to the dealer several times now. They rebuilt the valve body and it did seem to get better but still having issues
My 2016 ford fusion is terrible
We have a 2020 Ford Expedition with the same problems. From 3 different visits to the dealership, all they say is that is normal and will reset the computer so it will ‘relearn’ how you drive. It fixes nothing. We hate how it shifts and are regretting buy this vehicle. It never knows what gear it needs to be in and takes an abnormal amount of time to shift to reverse.
My 2017 Ford focus is having the same problem, Ford has been giving me the run around about fixing it of course.
I own a Ford expedition and I have had many issues over the years.
I have a 2020 ford mustang I have this issue. At times I will start car and begin to back out from driveway. I go to drive and it is like no acceleration. Literally for a second or two I have no power what so ever almost a habitual problem.
