Ford transmission defect class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group of Ford vehicle owners filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company.
  • Why: Vehicle owners argue Ford equipped certain of its model year 2017 and newer vehicles with defective 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions.

Ford Motor Company designed, manufactured and sold certain of its model 2017 and newer vehicles equipped with a defective 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

A group of Ford vehicle owners argue the automaker either knew or should have known the vehicles allegedly contained one or more design and/or manufacturing defects, including with their 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions.

Vehicle owners argue the alleged transmission defect caused the vehicles — including model year 2017 and newer Ford Expeditions, Mustangs, Rangers, F-150s, and Lincoln Navigators — to jerk, lunge, clunk, and hesitate between gears.

“Drivers need a properly functioning automatic transmission in order to safely and reliably accelerate and decelerate their Vehicles,” the Ford class action states. “A common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford’s 10R80 transmissions is a potentially life-threatening safety issue.”

Vehicle owners want to represent a nationwide class and an Alabama subclass of consumers who are current or former owners or lessees of one or more Ford vehicles equipped with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford refuses to recall or replace allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, says class action

Vehicle owners argue Ford failed to disclose the alleged defect to consumers, and has refused to recall or replace the allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, but, instead, “merely states that the abrupt and harsh shifting is normal.”

“An auto manufacturer that is aware of dangerous design defects that cause its vehicles to jerk, hesitate, surge, or slip gears must promptly disclose and remedy such defects,” the Ford class action states.

Vehicle owners claim Ford is guilty of fraud, unjust enrichment, negligence, and fraudulent concealment, among other things, and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Alabama Deceptive Trade Practices Act

Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, punitive, and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Ford earlier this month by a group of vehicle owners arguing the automaker manufactured certain of its model 2016 and newer vehicles with defective Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost engines

  1. Bruce Mack says:

My wife and I bought a new 2018 Ford Expedition in 2018. At about 80,000 miles, the transmission failed. All of the sounds and the hard shifting others have mentioned like “klunking” occurred with this vehicle. We paid $7,250 for a new transmission that Ford sent that was defective. Now we are on our third transmission at 88,000 miles. I would like to join the class action lawsuit as a plaintiff if that is possible. Thank you.

  2. Bruce Branning says:

2019 Mustang GT issues with shifting gears. Mostly happens when I’m traveling up a hill. If I decrease my speed just a little, the car seems to slip out of gear, after a couple seconds, I can feel the transmission engage and it jerks forward. Not a good feeling while you’re driving in your mind or on your body. What are the next steps to get this corrected?

    1. Bruce Branning says:

I forgot the mention, the car has approximately 16,000 miles on it. The 3 year warranty is up Oct 31, 2023.

    2. Roger Fowler says:

My wife and I bought a 2017 F150 XLT. The 2nd day we had the truck we felt the 10 speed transmission shifting and jerking. We carried it back and they told us they had to reset the transmission. It only takes 10 mins. I have argued with them for a couple years. Now my truck after 60k miles is not drivable. We are still making payment and it will be over $58,000 after its paid off. We have tried and tried to get Ford to help us. We have never pulled anything with our truck. We would love to join this lawsuit. Please send info and add us.

Ford f150 2018 3.5 eco 48k miles. Shift hard, down shifts, clunks when in reverse, loss of power, not fun to drive at all and I paid a lot of money for this truck. Also trans temperature gets really hot after 10 minutes of driving.

  4. justin wade says:

2019 transmission went into limp mode at 32k, transmission would jump from 10th gear to 4th sometimes 3rd gear going 65mph for no reason. I got told the PCM needed updated it was fine. the transmission continues to randomly shift gears and shake and shudder when shifting gears, Ford has once again told me oh its just the way the 10 speed tranny works. They intentionally rode the 60k warranty out so they didn’t have to fix their mistake on their dime, even 2 dealerships I tried told me that’s what they were told to do with them because the wait time for a replacement was 10months or longer. I paid way to much a month for a vehicle to be sitting for months waiting on transmission that ford won’t even fix when they knew they were bad!

  5. James Renz says:

I have a 2018 F150 with the 3.5l Eco Boost engine. The transmission shifts hard into gears sometimes but the number 1 issue I have is an extremely slow shift from 3rd to 4th, or from 3rd to 5th after a cold start. I have about 53,000 miles on the car right now with a drivetrain warranty to 60k. There’s a TSB for this issue (TSB 21-2357 and TSB 22-2139, possibly others) and I am going to have the dealership apply these fixes before the warranty is up. Hopefully this corrects the issue, but I am not hopeful. Please add me to this list.

    1. Janusz Rich says:

Not going to fix anything. Had those applied to my 2018 F 150 and they replaced the valve train assembly in the transmission. Did nothing and most recently had it for 6 weeks to tell me they didn’t feel anything while test driving and there were no failed diagnostic codes. Complete denial! In fact the loaner 2020 Expedition did the same things. Even the valet person said it exhibited these behaviors. I want to know how to become a part of the lawsuit. On June 26th I told them I want to initiate a buyback by Ford. I again had to text them this morning because they have ghosted me. Van Horn Ford in Oconomowoc WI.

  6. Joycelyn Patrick says:

I bought my car in 2020 and in 2021 of cracked flywheel occurred took it into the dealer they claim they fixed it 2022 the same problem occurred now in 2022 to current 2023 now my vehicle does not work now it’s something in my transmission and also had to change my core for the oil spill in the core now my vehicle is not working and I am still paying car note on it and they refuse to do anything about it and then the manager at the dealer on South Cobb told me to get rid of the car because Ford are making s*** list fix on the car only had my car for 2 years now three cuz they have been sitting in my garage and now I am still with pain of vehicle that I am not able to drive I Google about the car and a lot of comments said that the car go out at $55,000 mi I bought the car at $55,000 mi only drove 45,000 mi since I had it what a waste

  7. MABEL NEWMAN-HIGGINS says:

I have a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium it do jerk when putting in gear and out of gear

  8. Jack Mladek says:

Abrupt and harsh shifting is normal. NOT!!!!
Please add me to the ensuing on going litigations.

  9. Renae Craine says:

    Add me please

    1. John miles says:

Have a 2020 ford edge problem with the transmission slipng, jerking went to shop still not driving right only transportation in home ran out of warranty still not stable

  10. Jordon Eckman says:

I have a 2018 Ford Expedition Max (purchased new in early 2019) and have had countless issues with the transmission. It shifts from 10th gear to 5th gear or lower as I am driving on major highways at 60mph or higher, preventing me from accelerating. When it happens the car jerks and makes a clunking noise and it sounds as if I am in neutral and stepping on the gas pedal at the same time. This has happened so many times I have lost count. My local Ford dealership has attempted to diagnose the issue with no success. My car has currently been at my local Ford dealership for the past month because it would not even shift into gear for me to reverse or drive out of a parking spot, leaving me stranded and the car had to be towed. The car is extremely unsafe to drive and the dealership does not know what to do to repair it because they tell me that at the moment it is not “acting up” as it was when they had to tow it into the shop. This is my third Expedition and is by far the worst purchase I’ve ever made.

    1. Lynn Burka says:

I have a 2018 expedition platinum and it has almost gotten me killed twice now by going from 70 to 40 on the interstate in front of an 18 wheeler. The app shows it doing this and I have taken it to the dealership who has done nothing to correct it. I contacted them.after it did it again and they still have not gotten me in. I bought the SUV in October 2022 with little over 40k miles, value was at 60k. Now because of these issues coming to light, it has dropped 15k in value. I would like to sue the dealership because I am sure they were aware of these issues prior to selling to.me. the app shows and tracks this. They can see it on their computer. Yet I cannot trade in the vehicle because I am upside down, and it is not safe to drive. I bought it in Florida abd I purchased the extended warranty… they keep saying there is nothing wrong. YetnthevFORD APP CLEARLY DISPLAYS AND TRACKS THE POWER LOSS
