  • Why: The recall is due to a potential fire risk from overheating power steering system electrical components.
  • Where: The Jeep recall is effective in the United States.

FCA US is recalling more than 1 million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles due to a potential fire hazard associated with the electric power steering pump wiring.

The recall, announced on June 4, involves 787,887 Jeep Wrangler and 289,112 Gladiator models manufactured between 2021 and 2025.

The vehicles may have an electrical connection issue that can lead to overheating and combustion, even when the vehicle is turned off.

The issue arises from the electric-hydraulic power steering pumps, which can develop high resistance in their electrical connectors, leading to overheating. “Some owners may experience a loss of power steering assist or receive a ‘service power steering’ warning message on the dash,” the Jeep recall states.

According to reports, only a small fraction of the vehicles, approximately 0.1%, are expected to have the defect.

Owners urged to park vehicles outside, away from buildings and other vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a consumer alert stating, “Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from other vehicles and buildings until their vehicle has been repaired.”

The NHTSA played a significant role in prompting this Jeep recall after receiving multiple reports of engine compartment fires, including one death and injury report and 51 fire incidents.

The agency opened an investigation in September 2024, which led to FCA US reopening its internal investigation due to an increase in reported fires. The majority of these fires occurred when the vehicles were off, highlighting the severity of the risk.

To address the issue, FCA US will begin sending notification letters to owners starting July 9, 2026. These letters will provide further instructions on how to proceed with the repairs.

Vehicle identification numbers and license plates associated with the Jeep recall are also searchable on the NHTSA website. For additional information, owners can contact FCA’s customer service at 800-853-1403 or visit recalls.mopar.com.

Earlier this year, a class action lawsuit was filed in Michigan federal court, alleging FCA was aware of the defect based on consumer complaints and communications with NHTSA but concealed the issue from consumers at the time of sale or lease.
