Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action overview:

  • Who: Jesse Crowell filed a class action lawsuit against FCA U.S. LLC (Jeep).
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges Jeep Wrangler 4xes have a defect that limits the use of their electric system for months at a time during cold weather.
  • Where: The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action lawsuit was filed in Delaware federal court.

A defect prevents customers from using the electric operation of Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles, plaintiffs allege in a new lawsuit against the company that sells the Jeep brand.

Jesse Crowell filed a class action lawsuit claiming FCA U.S. LLC sells the vehicles using false claims about testing and the functionality of the vehicle’s electric capability.

The model in question is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which sells for more than $54,000. The lawsuit claims the vehicle’s “Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM)” triggers for long periods of time, which makes the electric-only operation unavailable. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect is apparent particularly during winter months, according to the lawsuit.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the defendant “actively misrepresented the attributes and capabilities” of the vehicles, which were supposed to be operable both by gasoline and electric charge. Gas-only vehicles are much less expensive than hybrids.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests ‘far more often and longer than reasonable,’ class action says

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the Jeeps are “capable of up to 21 miles of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion,” which would be enough to “get around town solely on electric power.”

The lawsuit explains that the company states that the electric power can be used as long as the battery is more than 1% full, but if sensors detect stale fuel or aged oil, owners are unable to drive their vehicles using only electric power. The plaintiff claims the FORM Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests “far more often and longer than reasonable.”

FCA recently recalled more than 62,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles on concerns the vehicle engine may shut down unexpectedly. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect was isolated to the transmission control module software.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action lawsuit is Jesse Crowell, et al. v. FCA U.S. LLC, Case No. 1:23-cv-00013-UNA, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

Does anyone know of a class action lawsuit? I cannot believe they’re getting away with this dangerous battery issue with no fix! I’m not able to park my jeep in the garage and it’s winter in New England, kind of defeats the purpose! My children sit right above the battery that can potentially catch on fire at any given time and jeep will not buy back my vehicle as it is way undervalued because of this issue. Is this not a violation of the lemon law? collectively we need a good attorney!

4xe wrangler 2024!. YES, THEY HAVE NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND KEEP SELLING THESE TRUCKS!. I almost got into an accident 2 times because of the “turtle light” that suddenly appeared on the dashboard making the truck not being able to go more than 8, 5 and then 3 miles an hr! On the highway and the second time crossing an intersection. Dealership just cannot fix the problem and they have had my truck for almost 2 months now. Engine light was on 48 hrs after I got the truck and from there has been nothing but a nightmare. This truck is not safe!

  3. Derek Lambert says:

I’m currently going on a month of FORM in my grand Cherokee 4xe. I have run through 2 tanks of gass while not being able to go into electric or hybrid mode.

  4. Jill says:

I received a letter stating that my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe had a recall. The 1st recall that my Jeep could experience an engine shut down condition may result in an unexpected loss of motive, power while driving, which could cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. Man at the dealership that I spoke to asked me to read the recall to him after reading the full recall to him, he set my appointment up for about a month later, knowing that this was a dangerous recall. Then I received a second recall in December the high voltage battery on the vehicle may fail internally, and the defect has not been identified and the root causes still being investigated and now we are in the month of February with no fix to the problem, they told me not to park near Buildings or in garage or near parked vehicles. My thought is I’m at the gas station where there is tons of people getting gas which is normal in my area and all of a sudden my jeep starts to go up in flames at the gas station when I’m pumping my gas just a thought, how dangerous would that be , I have had numerous water leaks coming from the one top roof through all of the door panels that had to be replaced. The floor is completely saturated at times where they had to put a humidifier in and it still has a stench that is unbearable. It is still happening and there’s still no resolution , it has been nothing but a living nightmare having this Jeep and for them to leave us in this jeep that could potentially go up and flames is just outrageous!

    1. Jamie says:

Aside from the leaking- I am having the same exact issues! I tried to trade my Jeep in for a new vehicle, and Jeep won’t even buy it back! They said they don’t want vehicles without a fix on their lot as they have too many already… Can you even believe that?

  5. Alexander Backes says:

My 4xe also has the B9A battery recall with still not fix in sight and no reimbursement for the inconvenience. It crazy they can sent out a letter warning of fire then go dark. Meanwhile my kids sit in there car seat in the rear right above the battery pack…

    1. Jamie says:

Same! Because of the children’s issue I made Jeep pay for a rental they’ll pay up to $40 a day if you fight hard enough.

I was notified that my 2021 hybrid jeep wrangler was part of a recall that could catch fire because of an issue with its battery. Although I was able to drive the vehicle (which still makes no sense to me), I should not charge it or park it near any structures. I contacted the dealership almost two months ago and was told a fix was not yet available.

  7. Tami Hull says:

What about the 2 life threatening recalls Jeep has put out on the Jeep 4XE. The first was a software issue that the vehicle could shut off at any time while going down the road. They had no fix at the time they released the recall, but after a month had a software update. The latest recall released the beginning of Dec 2023, the hybrid battery pack could catch fire, whether it’s charged or not. Don’t charge it and do t park your jeep in a structure is all they can offer? It’s almost 2 months of not being able to charge the vehicle, which means paying for more gas. Also 2 months of having to park my jeep outside, and not being able to store it in my garage. They did a software flash on my jeep, and it needs the replacement parts. There are none available anywhere in the US, and don’t know when they will be. This jeep has never gotten anywhere near the listed MPG. Tried to do an early lease return, they wanted me to pay the $19,000 that this jeep is now under value.
I have also had them check for a gas odor/ leak in 2023. Before the battery recall, when I parked my jeep in the garage after having run on gas, there was a strong gas odor. Mechanics claim it passed all emissions test and never reproduced the odor. It has always smelled of gas when parked inside ! Would love a class action suit on the latest recall.

  8. Sarah says:

My sales guy explained the 4xe to be hybrid when it’s 21 miles of electric then it shuts off. That is not hybrid. My car also brand new off the lot 2023 4xe wrangler had check engine light come on before i even pulled in driveway. When i brought it back there was apparently a defect in the heater for the battery. zit was August when I bought the car. I don’t know what story I’m getting but Jeep let everyone down with this 4xe. They just wanted government funding with the rebates.
