Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action overview:

  • Who: Jesse Crowell filed a class action lawsuit against FCA U.S. LLC (Jeep).
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges Jeep Wrangler 4xes have a defect that limits the use of their electric system for months at a time during cold weather.
  • Where: The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action lawsuit was filed in Delaware federal court.

A defect prevents customers from using the electric operation of Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles, plaintiffs allege in a new lawsuit against the company that sells the Jeep brand.

Jesse Crowell filed a class action lawsuit claiming FCA U.S. LLC sells the vehicles using false claims about testing and the functionality of the vehicle’s electric capability.

The model in question is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which sells for more than $54,000. The lawsuit claims the vehicle’s “Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM)” triggers for long periods of time, which makes the electric-only operation unavailable. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect is apparent particularly during winter months, according to the lawsuit.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the defendant “actively misrepresented the attributes and capabilities” of the vehicles, which were supposed to be operable both by gasoline and electric charge. Gas-only vehicles are much less expensive than hybrids.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests ‘far more often and longer than reasonable,’ class action says

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the Jeeps are “capable of up to 21 miles of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion,” which would be enough to “get around town solely on electric power.”

The lawsuit explains that the company states that the electric power can be used as long as the battery is more than 1% full, but if sensors detect stale fuel or aged oil, owners are unable to drive their vehicles using only electric power. The plaintiff claims the FORM Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests “far more often and longer than reasonable.”

FCA recently recalled more than 62,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles on concerns the vehicle engine may shut down unexpectedly. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect was isolated to the transmission control module software.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action lawsuit is Jesse Crowell, et al. v. FCA U.S. LLC, Case No. 1:23-cv-00013-UNA, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

  1. Jeff Lyles says:

I live in Michigan and I am unable to utilize the Electric advantage of the truck and no longer can park it in the garage or have my kids ride in the truck period in fear of it starting on fire. I honestly have had more issues with this vehicle than any other I’ve ever had. Pure junk

  2. Jakob Huffman says:

I own a 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4XE and I live in Michigan and from November to February I am not able to use the electric mode in my jeep because it is unavailable due to the cold weather. I have taken it in multiple times and they have said nothing about the FORM problem and they don’t know how to fix it

  3. jose luis garcia hoyo says:

  4. Ryan Smith says:

Similar to everyone else’s experience, my 2022 Wrangler 4xe has been nearly constantly stuck in FORM since November when the weather got colder. Oil gets diluted and the oil life monitor quickly drops to 0%. I’m at 2800 miles, and just had my 3rd oil change. If I’d known about this issue, I would not have gone with the 4xe.

  5. Jennifer says:

I ordered a 2022 Jeep Rubicon 4xE at $72k, got it in July 2022 and hav had nothing but electrical and FORM problems. It’s been it the shop 3 times for check engine light, turtle light, gas door open, among others, and is in form for weeks at a time. No one ever told us this would be an issue in cold weather as I live in Wisconsin. The last FORM stretch lasted 8 days and the temp her was 30’s-40’s. Absolutely disgusted with this vehicle as I’m not 6k upside down so I can’t even get out of this lease.

  6. Jeff H says:

purchased my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee in January. after three days, the hybrid did not work- temporary -oil refresh. Took vehicle to dealer twice, claim it is in need of a software update that is not available yet. bring back in another month to see if its available

  7. Mallory P says:

I have a 2023 Jeep wrangler 4xe with 2300 miles on it. I have had to reset my Oil change required light 15 times. With an oil change once, Star is aware of the issue. I rarely get to use the electric and am ALWAYS in FORM.

  8. Horacio San Roman says:

I have a 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe with the same problem. I have not been able to use the electric mode in more than a month because it is in oil & fuel refresh. Now the dealer tells me that I have to drive it for 2.5 hours to get out of that mode. Nobody told me that the electric mode will not work if I use the car for mostly short trips!

  9. Brent Bliss says:

Located in Buffalo NY so the weather swings from 2 degrees to 62 degrees anytime between November and May. I have been without electric mode 95% of the time and there is no logic to when it is available. Incredibly disappointing.

  10. Paul martin says:

It still won’t fix the issue. Mine had its heater replaced and that worked for a week. Now its back into FORM or electric mode unavailable. I want to join this lawsuit.
