Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action overview:

A defect prevents customers from using the electric operation of Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles, plaintiffs allege in a new lawsuit against the company that sells the Jeep brand. 

Jesse Crowell filed a class action lawsuit claiming FCA U.S. LLC sells the vehicles using false claims about testing and the functionality of the vehicle’s electric capability.

The model in question is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which sells for more than $54,000. The lawsuit claims the vehicle’s “Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM)” triggers for long periods of time, which makes the electric-only operation unavailable. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect is apparent particularly during winter months, according to the lawsuit. 

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the defendant “actively misrepresented the attributes and capabilities” of the vehicles, which were supposed to be operable both by gasoline and electric charge. Gas-only vehicles are much less expensive than hybrids.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests ‘far more often and longer than reasonable,’ class action says

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe class action claims the Jeeps are “capable of up to 21 miles of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion,” which would be enough to “get around town solely on electric power.” 

The lawsuit explains that the company states that the electric power can be used as long as the battery is more than 1% full, but if sensors detect stale fuel or aged oil, owners are unable to drive their vehicles using only electric power. The plaintiff claims the FORM Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect manifests “far more often and longer than reasonable.”

FCA recently recalled more than 62,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles on concerns the vehicle engine may shut down unexpectedly. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe defect was isolated to the transmission control module software.

    2022 Sahara 4XE. Death wobble was not something we expected to experience on a new, stock low-mileage Wrangler. Has already had a repair for the death wobble but it still shakes. The Wi-Fi hotspot doesn’t work/isn’t available despite being a feature on this model (will notify when it becomes available). Jeep has no Wi-Fi connection so no updates are being received. Was in the shop 2 times in 4 weeks and received updates on both visits. Are we supposed to schedule monthly visits for updates?? The heated seats and steering wheel refuse to come on as programmed. And we all bought them for the hybrid/electric capability but what does it really offer? My commute is 2 miles each way. I leave the house at 98% and arrive at my office (2 miles away) at 80% (give or take). By the time I arrive home, I’m under 50%! There are no answers…

    Our 2021 Wrangler 4xe has not operated “normally” in the 18 months we have had it. I have driven electric vehicles for 10 years. 3 Teslas, a Smart electric (still have), Volt, 3 Leaf’s and even a Fisker. Just bought a Rivian truck and in its first year in production operated flawlessly. The Wrangler? At least 7 visits to the shop, nearly 60 days! No loaner most of the time and just the runaround claiming it works “as designed”. Complete BS. Has not gone full electric or hybrid since we last got it back a month ago. It was 70 degrees out this week and still only getting 25mph. Run away from buying a Jeep!!

    My husband and I just purchased a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe a month ago. Our temperatures have dropped into the teens and 20’s this past week. I have been unable to use electric mode for the last day and a half. We feel completely misled. We adjusted our car payment because we knew we would be using less than 75% of gas we were purchasing. These cars are not cheap and if they aren’t delivering on the promise of at least 25 miles on all electric, why would anyone purchase them? Especially those living in cold climates half (or more) of the year.

    I purchased a 2023 jeep 4e and having all the same problems with the electrical in the winter months will not hold a charge and they say that’s the way the vehicle should run

    My 2021 Jeep Wrangler is essentially useless for normal driving! I put it in storage for the winter and disconnected the 12v battery! Not reliable enough to take more than 50 miles from home. Needs careful logging of fuel added and limited engine starts in cold weather. There is no way to force it to operate in ICE mode only, oil dilution sensor essentially forces dealer oil changes every few weeks. I have only managed to successfully drive it 3000 miles in one year of ownership!

    My 4xe will kick out of electric even though NONE of the reasons given in the (updated) owners manual are met which would cause the ICE to engage. Dealer is trying to claim that it didn’t do it for them when road tested because they charged the battery. I charge mine to full every night a d leave it plugged in until I leave for work. It is kept in a heated, insulated garage and the Temps where I live rarely get below freezing. Also, vehicle is NOT in FORM. Oil level increased way over full within just 600 miles.

    I am having the same issue with my 2022 4xe Jeep Wrangler. I’ve had this issue since I bought it in Feb. 2022. The oil life goes from 100%-0% and then goes into FORM and locks you out of electric til you get an oil change. My oil has been changed 4 times already and it has 6600 miles on it. It’s been in the shop 5-6 times and Jeep hasn’t found a fix. They just keep changing my oil and reset my oil life and then it works fine for this last time 200 miles and it says it needs an oil change due to diluted oil from the gas engine. It in the shop as I speak and Jeep told me to run the engine at 205 degrees for 20 min to 2 hours so the FORM will clear. I asked is it good to drive with 0% oil life and they won’t give me an answer. It’s so ridiculous. I am talking to them today about trading it in for a gas Jeep.

    I’ve also experienced these issues in my 2021 Rubicon 4xe. I average 32 MPG in Chicago summer months and 17 throughout the winter. Very frustrating that vehicle operating costs change dramatically with the weather. I’ve pretty much written off electric mode in the winter. I’ve had the FORM issue, “electric not available cabin heating or cooling” and “Electric Temporarily Unavailable” during the current mild winter we’re experiencing. It seems to choose a new excuse each day. If I wasn’t leasing the vehicle I would have traded it in on a Tesla or Rivian long ago! Now I just count down the days until my lease expires so I can drop this piece of garbage off at the dealer once and for all.

    My car turned off in the middle of the Highway multiple times. 2022 wrangler 4xe. Almost hit by cars or something considering I was going 50-70 everytime. A piece of shit car for 50k wish they would

    I have the 2021 hybrid Jeep. I have had the same issues as the article. I also had the issue of the Jeep shutting off whilst driving full speed on freeway. Thankfully was able to pull over and wait before restarting. It was the scariest thing to happen.

      After the recent software recall upgrade my 2w 4xe Sahara we ill not go into Electric mode..check engine lite is displayed. Jeep is sitting at the dealership awaiting a new Heater for the Battery system..Currently my Heater is locked out..and new one is on a national backorder list could be months till they get one..
