  • Why: The 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid electric vehicle engine may shut down unexpectedly.
  • Where: The Jeep Wrangler recall is active in the United States.

FCA US has recalled 62,909 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles as the 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid electric vehicle engine may shut down unexpectedly.

An engine shutdown can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash, the recall says. The company has reported two crashes potentially related to the issue so far.

The recall was issued Nov. 23 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, and applies to certain 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles equipped with 2.0L Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle engines.

FCA US reports two crashes related to the problem so far

The company said it was aware of two crashes and one injury potentially related to this problem so far.

As of Nov. 3, 2022, FCA US said it was also aware of 112 customer assistance records, 196 warranty claims, and 65 field reports potentially related to the issue.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Documents filed with NHTSA indicate that 100 percent of the targeted group have the defect, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.

Dealers will update the transmission control module software in affected vehicles free of charge, the recall states.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Jan. 12, 2023.

Meanwhile, FCA US is facing a class action lawsuit alleging there are defective electrical systems in hybrid Jeeps.

Add us to any class-action investigation/lawsuit. We have a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe, ordered from the factory through a dealership and picked up November, 2021.
