Despite their popularity, there are serious questions about whether or not CBD gummies contain as much of the active ingredient as manufacturers claim.
According to some lawsuits, many of these products contain only trace amounts of CBD, while others contain none whatsoever.
What is CBD?
CBD is an abbreviation of “cannabidiol,” a derivative of the cannabis (marijuana) plant and related species of the hemp family.
Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive; there is no “high” to be gotten from it. However, since state-level legalization of cannabis began a few years ago, CBD has been gaining acceptance across the country.
In 2015, the FDA began allowing scientists to research the benefits of CBD. That research found that CBD in its pure form is effective in treating anxiety in addition to pain and inflammation.
CBD entered into general public awareness as the result of media stories about a 7-year-old girl with a particular form of epilepsy whose seizures were reduced as a result of treatment with a strain of hemp with exceptionally high CBD levels.
What are CBD Gummies?
As information about CBD spread, a large number of “cottage industries” and new companies have sprung into being, whose proprietors and shareholders hope to cash in on the initial boom in CBD demand.
By 2018, “CBD gummies” was the third most commonly used search term related to food for a major internet search engine. It is easily obtained, even by people residing in states where marijuana is technically still illegal.
CBD gummies are essentially candies, similar to the popular “gummy bears.” No prescription is required, and there are virtually no serious side effects aside from drowsiness and mood changes – and those come only after very large doses (it is almost impossible to overdose on CBD).
Although many of the therapeutic claims have yet to be scientifically proven, many people swear by CBD – and gummies are a popular way to take it.
That is the good news.
The Bad News About CBD Gummies
CBD is still largely unregulated by the FDA – meaning that manufacturers can get away with many things, including selling products that do not live up to their claims.
In many cases, there is no way to know if CBD gummies or other CBD products contain a significant dose of the active ingredient – or any at all.
If allegations in a number of lawsuits prove to be true, it indicates that mislabeling is common, and people may be paying for nothing more than modern versions of 19th-Century “patent medicines.”
FDA Warnings
In fact, although it has little regulatory authority over the manufacture of CBD gummies and similar products, the FDA has already issued warnings to a number of companies involved in the sale of “unapproved new drugs that allegedly contain cannabindiol.”
A number of products that were tested have been shown to contain far less CBD than the manufacturer claims.
In addition to the fact that benefits have not been clinically proven, the FDA recommends that consumers exercise caution when purchasing CBD products.
