Not all CBD oil products contain CBD.If you purchase CBD oil products, you might not be receiving as much cannabidiol (CBD) as you’re led to believe.

Are CBD Oil Products Regulated?

The federal government is moving slowly when it comes to regulating  the testing and purity of CBD products. Some states, and the hemp industry itself, have begun regulating CBD products to ensure their safety.

Aren’t CBD Oil Products Tested?

CBD oil products are not tested on a regular basis and are not subject to  regulations that require testing. A third-party testing company recently reported that many supplements advertised as CBD products have little, or no CBD in them at all.

What Has Been Found in CBD Supplements?

Consumer Reports writes that in 2017, some 30 people were treated in  Salt Lake City emergency rooms for seizures, agitation, confusion and loss of consciousness after taking a pill labeled Yolo CBD. Testing revealed that the pills contained no CBD, but instead a dangerous synthetic cannabinoid.

Other CBD products have been found to contain the cough medicine dextromethorphan, which teens have been known to use to get high.

And some CBD products have more THC – the component in marijuana responsible for the high feeling – than they are supposed to. In Virginia, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), a researcher discovered that liquid used for vaping contained a dangerous form of synthetic cannabinoid known to “trigger paranoia and panic attacks, increase heart rate and blood pressure, and cause convulsions, organ damage, and even death,” according to Consumer Reports.

What Other Impurities Might Be in Unregulated CBD Products?

In recent years, supplements on the market have tested positive for inactive ingredients that might cause an allergic reaction in some people. Rice powder, asparagus, houseplants, soybeans and other fillers have all been found in unregulated supplements. These fillers might be found in CBD-based products as well, including gummies, capsules, edibles and liquids.

Why Doesn’t the FDA Regulate CBD Oil Products?

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has reportedly said that it could take years for the agency to figure out how to regulate CBD in the absence of Congress enacting legislation to do so.

What Prompted Cannabidiol Products to Become Legal?

CBD has demonstrated health benefits without the high feeling that accompanies marijuana use.

In addition to treating children with epileptic seizures, CBD has been used to treat anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, acne, heart disease and depression, according to Healthline.

What Is the Hemp Authority Symbol?

The Hemp Authority Symbol is a product seal used to show that the manufacturer of the CBD oil product underwent and passed an audit of its manufacturing and testing facilities.

What is a Certificate of Analysis?

According to CitizenTruth.org, even if a business does not have the Hemp Authority Symbol, it should be able to show a Certificate of Analysis,  a document from an accredited lab that breaks down  the quantity of cannabinoids in a product.

How Much THC is Allowed in CBD Products?

Hemp-derived CBD oil, CitizenTruth.org reports, is not allowed to contain more than 0.3 percent THC or else it is considered marijuana, which is still illegal in many states.

What States Have the Best Testing Guidelines for CBD Products?

Colorado ensures that any CBD products added to food test below the 0.3 percent level of THC. Oregon’s growers test their CBD extract of hemp plants for CBD and THC levels, as well as for pesticides or chemicals that might be used to procure CBD from hemp.

Vermont is developing a program to test products for CBD, THC and contaminants. The state is working on its own designation to verify that its hemp products are grown and processed in Vermont to reduce exposure to contaminants.
