Pradaxa-Internal-Bleeding-StomachDaiichi Sankyo is facing increasing legal pressure from the growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) formed against the company, with each of the claims alleging serious Benicar complications.

The latest Benicar lawsuit comes from a California resident, alleging the medication caused severe gastrointestinal problems.

Plaintiff Vernice W. is filing the Benicar lawsuit against the Japanese pharmaceutical giant, alleging the company failed to warn against their product’s side effects.

Vernice was prescribed the drug in 2013 to treat hypertension or high blood pressure, and started experiencing Benicar complications soon after.

According to the lawsuit, Vernice suffered a number of Benicar complications including:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Malabsorption
  • Fatigue
  • Malnutrition
  • Dehydration
  • Inflammation
  • Villous Atrophy
  • Sprue-like Enteropathy
  • Colitis
  • Chronic Intestinal Injury

Chronic intestinal damage was allegedly caused by these Benicar complications, along with permanent nutrition absorption problems.

Financial damages were incurred due to the need for medical treatment, with Vernice having to be permanently vigilant against problems with malabsorption.

Vernice is filing this Benicar lawsuit, alleging there was no warning provided on the drug’s warning label or provided to the prescribing physician.

Overview of Benicar Complications

Benicar was approved by the FDA in 2002 to treat high blood pressure and hypertension in patients. The medication works by dilating the body’s blood vessels, which relaxes circulation and lowers blood pressure.

This medication is meant to help lower the chances of heart disease and cardiac attack, ultimately increasing the patient’s longevity.

However there have been numerous reports of Benicar complications, indicating the medication caused serious gastrointestinal injuries.

Previously, numerous Benicar patients had been diagnosed with Celiac disease, due to the nature of the symptoms.

When the Mayo Clinic conducted a 2012 study observing Benicar patients, however, researchers noted none of the patients tested positive for Celiac.

Soon after the results were collected, the FDA released a public warning regarding Benicar complications in April 2014.

The agency warned the public the medication could induce potentially chronic gastrointestinal side effects, with severe cases developing into villous atrophy.

Even though these side effects could potentially result in long term complications for the patient, Daiichi Sankyo allegedly omitted this information from Benicar’s warning label, and even though the FDA required Benicar’s label to be updated to include gastrointestinal side effects, this warning came too late to many people.

The MDL formed against Daiichi Sankyo consists of similar Benicar lawsuits, alleging gastrointestinal side effects.

Vernice’s Benicar lawsuit is filed as part of the MDL, In re: Benicar (Olmesartan) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2606 in the U. S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
