Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has launched a major investigation into gaming and chat platform Roblox over widespread allegations of harm to children.
Tong announced the Roblox probe on May 26, issuing a civil investigative demand targeting the company’s handling of child safety on its platform.
The investigation stems from widespread reports of child exploitation and parents’ legal claims nationwide that allege the company’s platform creates a gateway to grooming and other inappropriate behavior.
“Roblox built an online pedophile playground,” Tong said in a statement, as reported by Law360. “Our investigation seeks to uncover exactly what the company knew about widespread child exploitation on its platform, how they have profited and what they have or have not done to protect our kids online.”
Tong noted that his office has sued Meta and is investigating TikTok, alleging that technology companies and lawmakers have not done enough to protect children online.
AG’s demand targets Roblox’s alleged profits from child exploitation
According to a Law360 report, the Connecticut attorney general’s civil investigative demand seeks specific data from Roblox.
Tong is demanding information about the age of users in Connecticut, the income Roblox has generated from those users and the number of hours they spend on the platform.
The demand also seeks company records about parental controls and the measures Roblox has taken to prevent misuse of its virtual gaming currency.
Bryan T. Cafferelli, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, stated that Roblox’s own data showed that most of its daily active users are under 18, creating an environment in which predators can target minors.
The Connecticut investigation is part of a broader wave of legal pressure on Roblox.
The State of Oklahoma is also suing Roblox, alleging the online gaming platform failed to adequately protect children from sexual predators despite marketing itself as a safe environment for minors.
Meanwhile, a separate class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court by a guardian on behalf of a minor, alleging Roblox deliberately built a multi-billion-dollar empire on the unpaid and underpaid labor of children.
