A new Apple class action lawsuit alleges Apple misrepresented the privacy protection offered by its iCloud Private Relay feature.
Plaintiff Maria Rosado-Wright filed the class action lawsuit against Apple on Aug. 14 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
According to the lawsuit, Apple misrepresented the privacy protection offered by its iCloud Private Relay feature, leading consumers to overpay for iCloud+ subscriptions.
Rosado-Wright claims Apple advertised iCloud Private Relay as a privacy feature that prevents websites from seeing both a user’s identity and the sites they visit.
However, the class action lawsuit alleges that a recent report by security researchers found that Apple’s browser engine, WebKit, sends users’ real IP addresses to websites even when iCloud Private Relay is enabled.
The lawsuit claims Apple knew about the issue but continued to sell iCloud+ subscriptions without disclosing the flaw.
Rosado-Wright alleges that Apple has not refunded any part of the subscription price for a feature that did not deliver the promised protection.
Apple’s iCloud Private Relay feature bypassed by WebKit, lawsuit alleges
Rosado-Wright claims Apple charged consumers for iCloud+ subscriptions, which include iCloud Private Relay, without disclosing that the feature did not work as advertised.
The class action lawsuit alleges that Apple’s WebKit browser engine bypasses the privacy feature, exposing users’ real IP addresses and DNS queries.
Rosado-Wright claims Apple acknowledged the defect after the researchers’ report was published and promised a fix for fall 2026. However, she claims Apple has not offered refunds or price adjustments for affected subscribers.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple violated California’s Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law and Consumers Legal Remedies Act.
Rosado-Wright is demanding a jury trial and requesting certification of a nationwide class of iCloud+ subscribers who enabled iCloud Private Relay. She is also seeking damages, restitution and injunctive relief.
Meanwhile, in another Apple class action lawsuit, a consumer claims Apple’s Hide My Email feature does not work as promised, allowing anyone to uncover users’ real email addresses.
