Nature Made prenatal vitamins class action overview:

  • Who: Two consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Pharmavite LLC, doing business as Nature Made.
  • Why: They claim Nature Made prenatal vitamins contain toxic plastic chemicals.
  • Where: The Nature Made prenatal vitamins class action was filed in California federal court.

A new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges that Nature Made prenatal vitamins contain toxic plastic chemicals despite being marketed as safe for pregnant and lactating women.

Plaintiffs Melissa Lang and Mildred Sevy filed the class action complaint against Nature Made on April 18 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, Nature Made prenatal vitamins are misleadingly marketed as safe for pregnant and lactating women, developing fetuses, newborns and infants.

The plaintiffs allege that recent third-party testing revealed that the vitamins contain numerous plastic chemicals, including di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, phthalate substitute diethylhexyl terephthalate and bisphenol A (BPA).

Findings contradict labeling, Nature Made class action alleges

Lang and Sevy say the findings contradict Nature Made’s prominent front-label representations that the vitamins “support the development of baby’s brain, eyes & nervous system.”

The findings also contradict Nature Made’s marketing of the vitamins as healthful and carefully developed, including its claims of “clinically proven absorption” and back-label assurances that the vitamins contain “no synthetic FD&C dyes” and are “gluten free,” the class action lawsuit claims.

Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals mainly used as plasticizers added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics for softening effects, which are detrimental to human health, the lawsuit states.

BPA is an endocrine-disrupting synthetic compound used to produce polycarbonate plastic and is harmful to human health through different molecular mechanisms, the lawsuit explains.

Lang and Sevy claim Nature Made’s misleading representations and unfair business practices are plainly improper and unacceptable.

A Nature Made prenatal recall has not been issued, and the company issued a statement on June 19 telling consumers that “Nature Made prenatal vitamins are safe, efficacious, and high quality.”

The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone in the United States who purchased Nature Made prenatal vitamins during the applicable statutory period. They are suing for breach of warranty and violations of California’s consumer protection laws and seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

In July 2022, two class action lawsuits filed in New York and California respectively allege that Nature Made Extra Strength Chewable Vitamin C products were actually normal strength.

I’m on pregnancy number 3, I’m due in September. I’ve taken these with each pregnancy, each 13 months of breastfeeding, and in-between my pregnancies. I’ve been struggling with quite a few issues mentally and physically with myself, as well as having an issue with each pregnancy. Not sure if it’s related, but I thought these pills were completely safe, healthy, and beneficial for myself and my infants (via breast milk).

  2. Karli says:

I took these prenatals with my first child and lost so much weight so fast after he was born it was very concerning. Normally 140 lbs I dropped below 120 lbs postpartum. I am now in my second pregnancy and I took these for the first 6 month and just switched a month ago after I heard about how it can affect your health. I really do believe this may have contributed to my significant unexplained weightloss that left me at an unhealthy weight.
