cadillac class action lawsuitA class action lawsuit has been filed against Cadillac Automobile Company, a division of General Motors LLC, alleging certain 2010-2013 model year Cadillac SRX vehicles were designed and manufactured with a defective sunroof design that causes outside water to leak into the passenger compartment.

Plaintiff Kelley Gaines alleges the affected vehicles have defective sunroof seals and/or sunroof drains that allow water from outside the vehicle to enter the passenger compartment, causing property damage such as wet carpet, mold, and damage to interior components.

She seeks to represent herself and a Class of all current and former owners or lessees of 2010-2013 model year Cadillac SRX vehicles in California who paid for repair and/or replacement of their vehicles because of the leaky sunroof defect.

According to the Cadillac leaky sunroof class action lawsuit, Cadillac has denied warranty coverage for issues associated with the sunroof defect, including the costs associated with cleaning the vehicles and repairing and/or replacing component parts, including wiring and electronic modules.

The Cadillac class action lawsuit notes that Cadillac issued a bulletin to technicians about the water leak, which indicated the most common potential causes as a void in the seal or a problem with the sunroof drain hoses. The alleged issue with the sunroof drain hoses is that they are too short and therefore subject to a higher level of tension that may cause them to disconnect and allow outside water to leak into the passenger compartment.

“Based on its own Service Bulletins and Customer Satisfaction programs, Defendant had actual knowledge and notice, or in the exercise of reasonable care should have known, during the warranty period covering the Class Vehicles of the existence and nature of and correction for the Leaking Sunroof defect,” the Cadillac class action lawsuit alleges.

Even though Cadillac knew or should have known about the leaky sunroof defect, Class Members had to pay to repair the damage caused by the leaking sunroofs. Gaines asserts Cadillac has failed to provide Class Members with a permanent remedy for the sunroof defect and has excluded them from the Customer Satisfaction program and warranty repairs.

According to the Cadillac class action lawsuit, Class Members have incurred and will continue to incur out-of-pocket costs and expenses to repair, replace and/or clean parts of the vehicle that have been affected by the leaking sunroof defect.

More than 222,000 Cadillac SRX vehicles are reportedly affected by the alleged leaky sunroof defect.

Gaines says her Cadillac SRX vehicle experienced the leaking sunroof defect in February 2017, when she noticed the floorboard carpet was soaking wet. She took the vehicle to be repaired, and it was allegedly determined the right front sunroof drain hose was loose. Both sunroof drain tubes were replaced, according to the Cadillac class action lawsuit.

The cost of repairing the sunroof defect and cleaning the vehicle’s carpets cost Gaines more than $1,000, the Cadillac class action lawsuit says. She filed a claim with her automobile insurance company, which paid a portion of the costs, but Gaines says she was still required to pay her insurance deductible of $250.

The Cadillac class action lawsuit asserts claims for breach of express warranty, violation of California’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act, California’s Unfair Competition Law, unjust enrichment and declaratory relief.

Gaines is represented by Robert A. Waller of Law Office of Robert A. Waller Jr. and Patricia L. Zlaket of Zlaket Law Offices APC.

The Cadillac Leaky Sunroof Class Action Lawsuit is Kelley Gaines v. Cadillac Automobile Company, et al., Case No. 3:17-cv-00989-LAB-JLB, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

I have a 2016 Cadillac SRX, My sunroof leaked inside my front drivers and passenger side floor boards were soaked with water. My dash borard went completely black, my rear trunk won’t open. The wheel well is flooded with rain water. My module is fried, also my wire harness is corroded. My car has been in the shop since November 3, 2022. Dealer had to take the inside completely apart including the seats. This is so wrong on so many levels that Cadillac is not owning up to this problem which caused thousands of dollars to repair and end up bringing back for same problem. I believe they should total all Cadillac SRX’s that have severe water damage. Once a car is water damaged it’ll never be the same. I’ll never buy another Cadillac and this is my 3rd one and my daughter has purchased 3. I’m done with GM period.

…thanks to all for these responses. Our 2014 was repaired under original warranty, then repair DENIED by dealer who had sold us a warranty. Get this: “a pre-existing conditon”. Has anyone really figured out what is wrong with this? Is this the door seal or sun roof?? Those who approached state AG…did anyone get results? Anyone know how to fix it? The car is at the dealer and it’s ‘ground-hog day’…same diagnostics as previous dealer.

    Thx…ed

I have a 2011 SRX that is going into Devoe Cadillac in Naples Florida for the 5th time for flooding in the cabin. I had paid out of pocket in the past but this time I filed an insurance claim with State Farm who is covering new carpet, new headliner, new sunshade, new motors for sunroof, sunshade and hatch. This has been a chronic problem since day one when I purchased the car. I would love to join a class action suit for this pitiful design flaw. Drain tubes backing up? Then let Cadillac pay for periodic maintenance to clean them out.

My 2016 SRX has several inches of water in the spare tire compartment- it’s fried my tailgate lift. Wicked pissed to find they’ve been sued over this previously, and failed to correct the problem. I am absolutely, contacting our State Attorney General in the morning.

  6. Christina says:

I had the sunroof drains fail in the front and the rear of my 2013 Cadillac SRX. The GM dealership near me charged us over $13,000 to repair, just got the car back last week and now noticed that the sunroof no longer opens like it did prior to the water damage. Had to take it back to them and they are claiming the sunroof didn’t work before they did all the electrical work on my car. This whole thing is a total nightmare!!!

  7. Don Strasser says:

GM has created quite a lemon in the Cadillac SRX, I have a 2014 that I had to replace headlights on, (should have been a safety recall) dealer wanted about $1500, but I was able to order parts and do myself for under $400. The spare tire area where the hatch motor and control module for it, the hatch quit working and I found about 5 inches of water in it from improper drains on the sunroof, again the dealer cost was around $1500 to repair but I was able to do myself for under $450. When I go through a car wash the power door locks quit working until the car gets dried out usually about a day later, Now the sunroof has stopped working and the sunshade will only close half way. Each time I drive I wonder what will quit working next. Oh yes, a couple weeks ago the radio was on and volume went to full max and when turned down would go right back up and we had a time getting the radio to shut off, but now is working fine. Cadillac should be ashamed for building such a POS.

I have a 2016 SRX and I am now having this problem. I am having the lift gate module replaced for the 2nd in 6 weeks.

    1. Larry Lewis says:

Me to. Water in the cargo damaged the lift gate control module. I’m now replacing it again after 6 months.

      1. Don Strasser says:

Larry Lewis, I remedied the problem by drilling two small holes in the spare tires lower storage area just in front of the liftgate module and pump motor, this seems to have taken care of my liftgate problems after replacing the module and liftgate pump motor. GM has to know of all the problems but deny that they should take care of them.

  9. Alison Leahy says:

I have a 2011 SRX and sun roof started leaking on the passanger side. Plus the headlights have water in them and at night the headlights barely light up the road. It doesn’t matter what kind of light bulb I use could. I’ve tried really expensive ones and they don’t do a thing.

    1. Jen says:

I also have a 2011 that has the same issue. We totally replace the entire headlight not just the bulb and they have been great! But the leaking sunroof has caused a lot of damage. Car was broke down for a couple months and every time it rained it leaked. Several months of that and it being parked, the water filled both sides of the floorboards. This car will be the death of me.

  10. Crystal says:

I have a 2010 Cadillac SRX with the same sun roof drain tube issue! I can’t afford to get this problem fixed right now so I’m resorting to watching YouTube videos to fix it myself! When it rains, water just pours inside the front bottom driver side and front passenger side. I’m very disappointed in Cadillac for not recalling this issue. This is the second major issue I’ve come across that is a costly repair and I just purchased this vehicle a year ago!
