Thousands of women are considering an Essure reversal after reports that the permanent birth control device may cause chronic pain, internal organ perforation, or coil migration.

Essure in the News

Although Bayer took Essure off the U.S. market after the end of 2018, thousands of women who were previously implanted with the permanent birth control device may still be suffering negative side effects from the device.

Approximately 750,000 women have been implanted with Essure for the purposes of sterilization. According to an article published in Forbes, more than 16,000 American women have filed lawsuits against Bayer regarding injuries and health conditions they claim to have experienced due to the device. It is unknown how many women have sought an Essure reversal due to these claims.

What is Essure?

Essure is a type of permanent birth control used for female sterilization. It is manufactured by Bayer and was approved by the FDA in 2002 for implantation in women ages 21 to 45.

The device is comprised of a pair of metal coils made from polyester, nickel, titanium, platinum, silver-tin, and stainless steel. These coils are inserted into the fallopian tubes, where they promote inflammation, tissue growth, and scarring. This tissue growth causes the tubes to grow together and blocks eggs from implanting.

Symptoms and Side Effects of Essure

Multiple symptoms and side effects associated with Essure have been reported in lawsuits and complaints regarding the birth control. These side effects include:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Perforation of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Migration of the coils into the pelvis or abdomen
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Joint problems
  • Back pain
  • Systemic symptoms
  • A general feeling that something isn’t right
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • Concentration issues
  • Bloating
  • Hair loss
  • Tooth problems

Essure Reversal

For many women who have experienced negative Essure side effects, Essure reversal may be an effective treatment option. The birth control device may be removed during a laparoscopic surgical procedure utilizing several small puncture incisions. Essure removal is an outpatient surgery and generally takes less than an hour.

During this procedure, the coils are cut out of the fallopian tubes. The safest and most effective way to remove the coils is to remove the entire piece of the fallopian tube that the coils are attached to. Attempting to pull the coils out of the tube may result in the device becoming damaged or breaking into pieces.

If these broken pieces are not removed, they may migrate and perforate other internal organs. Removing Essure does not affect fertility. Women who have their Essure devices removed will still be sterile.

If you were implanted with an Essure birth control device and suffered negative side effects or symptoms, up to or including Essure reversal, you may qualify to join an Essure investigation and pursue compensation for your injuries and suffering.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
