Public Warned Against Concerns Regarding Nexium and KidneysNexium and kidneys have become negatively associated for years after numerous patients reportedly developed chronic kidney disease.

AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and other drug companies have been named in a recent Nexium kidney lawsuit alleging that the companies failed to warn the plaintiff couple that Nexium and kidneys created a potentially dangerous combination.

Plaintiff couple James G. and Cindy G. allege that Nexium and kidneys are negatively connected, and that the companies should have described this connection on the Nexium and the other proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication labels.

This Nexium kidney lawsuit is joining a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL), consisting of other claims from patients alleging they developed permanent kidney damage from the medications.

The Nexium kidney lawsuit alleges that James tried a number of different PPI medications between 2004 to 2018 for typical treatment purposes, which allegedly caused him to develop kidney disease. The PPIs mentioned in the Nexium kidney lawsuit included Nexium, Prevacid and Protonix.

The complaint says that at no point in time did James use the PPIs outside of their intended purpose and had no reason to be wary of the effects induced by Nexium and kidneys. Even with this diligence, James says, he developed chronic kidney disease and has been contending with the condition ever since.

James and Cindy opted to file this Nexium kidney lawsuit against Takeda and the other pharmaceutical companies after discovering there were several studies that indicated there was a negative correlation between Nexium and kidneys.

Overview of Proton Pump Inhibitor Kidney Damage

Nexium and other PPI medications work by limiting the amount of digestive acids produced in the stomach, which helps treat a number of different conditions like stomach ulcers, heart burn and acid reflux.

Proton pump inhibitors are one of the most widely used medications in the United States, with over 15 million patients using prescription variants. The number is suspected to be much higher with the availability of the over the counter variants, which further increases the concern surrounding the alleged Nexium and kidneys correlation.

One of the most prominent studies to investigate this correlation was published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, which discovered that patients prescribed proton pump inhibitors faced a higher risk of kidney damage.

The study found that PPI medications had a 96 percent increased risk of kidney failure and 28 percent risk of chronic kidney disease, compared to patients who were prescribed histamine H2 receptor blocker medications.

Another study published in February 2016 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that PPI medications increased the risk of chronic kidney disease. This study was conducted to show a link between PPI medications and acute interstitial nephritis, which is a condition known to evolve into kidney failure.

Even though these medications may damage the kidneys, James and Cindy claim Takeda and the other pharmaceutical companies allegedly failed to warn against the alleged Nexium and kidneys correlation. James states he would not have agreed to take these PPI medications, if he knew of the increased risk of chronic kidney disease.

James and Cindy’s Nexium kidney lawsuit is joining MDL No. 2789, and will be streamlined through the litigation process.

This Nexium Kidney Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-13086-CCC-MF, in the United States District Court of New Jersey.
