What is a tracking pixel and how does it work?

A tracking pixel is a tiny image or piece of code embedded in a webpage. It often goes completely unnoticed by users, but when someone visits the page, the pixel can send information about that visit — such as the user’s IP address, browser type, pages viewed and actions taken — to third parties for analytics, advertising or data tracking purposes.

On many retail and media websites, tracking pixels are commonly used for marketing and advertising. However, when these tools are placed on health, recovery or medical websites, the information they collect may become far more sensitive because it can relate to a person’s health concerns, treatment searches or other private activities.

Many users may not even realize that their browsing activity and personal information could be tracked and shared while visiting these websites.
