Gannett newspaper renewal class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Nichole Anderson filed a class action lawsuit against Gannett Co., Inc.
  • Why: Anderson claims Gannett unlawfully renews newspaper subscriptions for consumers who have already canceled their subscription.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Gannett deceptively and unlawfully automatically renews the newspaper subscriptions of consumers who have already canceled their subscriptions, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Nichole Anderson claims Gannett acts in a “fraudulent” and “unconscionable” manner by allegedly continuing to charge consumers for their subscriptions even if they are canceled before they are set to renew.

Anderson argues that Gannett breaches its contract with consumers by allegedly continuing to charge for newspaper subscriptions that have been canceled.

“Defendant routinely fails to honor consumers’ requests to stop their newspaper subscriptions from automatically renewing and instead, continues to charge them subscription fees without their authorization in breach of the express terms of its contract,” the Gannett class action states.

Gannett class action alleges breach of contract, unjust enrichment

Anderson’s subscription to the Courier News was automatically renewed despite her canceling the subscription and receiving confirmation that it was done, the Gannett class action states.

“As a result of Defendant’s fraudulent conduct, Plaintiff paid nearly $10.00 in unauthorized charges from Defendant,” according to the Gannett newspaper renewal lawsuit.

Anderson claims Gannett is guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of contract and in violation of the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act

She demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

Anderson wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who continued to be charged for a Gannett-owned newspaper subscription despite already having canceled their subscription to that newspaper.

Additionally, she wants to represent a subclass of consumers who purchased a subscription to the Courier News and who were continued to be charged after they canceled their subscription.

In related news, last month, a judge ruled that a $6.7 million class action settlement between The Washington Post and consumers who say their subscriptions were unlawfully automatically renewed could move forward

I have no idea how these charges keeps appearing on my credit card for $9.99 that I just checked today June 27, 2023. So far I have 6 charges from December till May 31, 2023. I was going to call the number listed but after reading the comments, I can see that will be of no use. HELP!

  2. James Jensen says:

my 84 year old mother was charged for a “digital” e-subscription, when the only thing she had ever subscribed for, was a PAPER edition….!!!! I called the, they said she signed up for it, $59 charge NOT REFUNDABLE…..they are LIARS !!!! and THIEVES!!!! then, they would not cancel it, without speaking with her, even though it was MY CREDIT CARD that they had billed !!!! ( this was for Jacksonville Times-Union — which no doubt will SOON be going out of biz, due to operating in such a CROOKED manner )

wow do i feel like an idiot – they have been charging me for months now! i dont see any where to cancel – they dont answer phone – how do we stop it going forward?

  4. Nathan Jenniges says:

Yes, same thing happened to me with Indy Star under Gannett. I had previously cancelled and then suddenly started getting charged again. They make it very difficult to cancel a digital subscription with no links or info in your account. I emailed customer support and got an auto email saying I could call or use a chat to cancel. The chat link was an invalid URL. Finally find a chat link buried in site and went thru a lengthier than necessary chat to cancel again but have no confidence that I actually did as I suspect they just do temporary holds ala like I am going on vacation and don’t want my paper delivered for period time. Very deceptive and difficult and seems wrong in this digital age

I noticed a 9.99 payment to Gannet newspaper on May 4th on an account I NEVER use for reoccurring charges or automatic payments, plus I KNOW I didn’t sign up for a newspaper subscription! I’ve tried contacting the number with the charge and it’s clearly a scam, no options or live person. I got charged again June 4th for 9.99 and AGAIN June 14th!
I’m contacting my state Attorney General’s office to file a complaint and alert the BBB and to those with the issue, same issue, I strongly urge you to contact your AG as well as the BBB! This is stealing and fraud and they need to be charged criminally!

  6. Christian Duran says:

I, too, have realized that I’ve been being charged $15.86 monthly by Gannett Newspapers and I have no idea what this is.

  7. Kathleen says:

I am being charged $14.99 by Gannett on my Amex and I have tried every single one of their brands and none of htem have a record of my email. I don’t know how they got my card! I tried calling the phone number supplied to my credit card company and it is not in service. This is SUCH A SCAM!! If you are paying via a credit card, contact them and tell them not to honor it. If it’s your bank, you can stop the payments. But you CANNOT in any way, contact Gannett about this. I literally just spent half a day trying to figure this out and then found this article. I want to know how I can join this class action suit.

    1. Willo Wilson says:

I formally went in and canceled my subscription and they have renewed it without my permission!!!!

  8. Lisa Reyes says:

I am currently being charged 9.99 and 7.99 twice a month from these people that I never even signed up for so I have no clue how they even got my card information. I’ve tried over and over again to get ahold of someone with no luck. How do I make this stop.

  9. Lynn Graham says:

I am currently being charged $14.99 for a digital subscription. That I have asked to cancel several times

  10. Angela Parks says:

I have called repeatedly to have this charge for newspaper(s) removed and they tell me it’s been canceled and I will recieve a refund, which I have not yet
