Gannett newspaper renewal class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Nichole Anderson filed a class action lawsuit against Gannett Co., Inc.
  • Why: Anderson claims Gannett unlawfully renews newspaper subscriptions for consumers who have already canceled their subscription.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Gannett deceptively and unlawfully automatically renews the newspaper subscriptions of consumers who have already canceled their subscriptions, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Nichole Anderson claims Gannett acts in a “fraudulent” and “unconscionable” manner by allegedly continuing to charge consumers for their subscriptions even if they are canceled before they are set to renew.

Anderson argues that Gannett breaches its contract with consumers by allegedly continuing to charge for newspaper subscriptions that have been canceled.

“Defendant routinely fails to honor consumers’ requests to stop their newspaper subscriptions from automatically renewing and instead, continues to charge them subscription fees without their authorization in breach of the express terms of its contract,” the Gannett class action states.

Gannett class action alleges breach of contract, unjust enrichment

Anderson’s subscription to the Courier News was automatically renewed despite her canceling the subscription and receiving confirmation that it was done, the Gannett class action states.

“As a result of Defendant’s fraudulent conduct, Plaintiff paid nearly $10.00 in unauthorized charges from Defendant,” according to the Gannett newspaper renewal lawsuit.

Anderson claims Gannett is guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of contract and in violation of the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act

She demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

Anderson wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who continued to be charged for a Gannett-owned newspaper subscription despite already having canceled their subscription to that newspaper.

Additionally, she wants to represent a subclass of consumers who purchased a subscription to the Courier News and who were continued to be charged after they canceled their subscription.

In related news, last month, a judge ruled that a $6.7 million class action settlement between The Washington Post and consumers who say their subscriptions were unlawfully automatically renewed could move forward

  1. Jolita Brazzano says:

Gannett is still charging me for papers I never received. This has been going on for 2 years and I cancel the charge every quarter. They snuck in a payment in December and I again had to cancel the payment this month. How can I get these people to stop stealing my money?

  2. Dianne Murphy says:

I was charged $47.94 by Gannett which was taken out of my checking account on December 29, 2023. I did not authorize this. I have been told by Gannett billing, three different times, that the refund was processed. However, my credit union has no record of ever receiving this refund.

  3. Bobby Phillips says:

I just found a recurring $11.99/month charge from “Gannett Newspapr” and can’t figure out why or how to cancel it. Haven’t looked back all the way yet but looks like it’s been happening for a long time. I checked the only newspaper that so ever subscribed to and there is no credit card info stored in my online account.

  4. Monique says:

I also have a recurring charge of $14.99 per month after I cancelled months ago. It was $11.99 but they even increased it to $14.99 without notification!

  5. Stormy Tribe says:

  6. Shannon Karl says:

I canceled my subscription to Gannett newspaper months ago. I’m still being charged $11.99 a month. This just happened today! Obviously I haven’t been reimbursed either.

  7. Tracy C says:

I have been seeing this 14.99 charge for almost a year now. I don’t know why and how i started being charged. This is wrong. How can we recoup our money?

  8. William Schindel Jr says:

Yes. I just realized I have being charged since July. I canceled in July and they continued to charge me for July, August and September.

  9. Donal Shane Cullen says:

Yes. for delivery issues that were not addressed. Also, after six months of non-delivery. I cancelled entire account and was billed a different amount 7 days later.

  10. Jamie Hines says:

I recently complained to the BBB about Gannet for this exact reason. They charged and continued charging me for something I canceled. I would love to join a class action lawsuit against Gannet. They have got to stop doing this to people, and I don’t understand how they continually get away with their fraudulent practices. I saw today that Gannet is suing Google and saying they are losing money because Google has a ‘monopoly’ on digital advertising. Gannet is losing money because they are defrauding their customers. I also saw some of their former employees suing them for discrimination. Gannet is the worst.
