Gannett newspaper renewal class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Nichole Anderson filed a class action lawsuit against Gannett Co., Inc.
  • Why: Anderson claims Gannett unlawfully renews newspaper subscriptions for consumers who have already canceled their subscription.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Gannett deceptively and unlawfully automatically renews the newspaper subscriptions of consumers who have already canceled their subscriptions, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Nichole Anderson claims Gannett acts in a “fraudulent” and “unconscionable” manner by allegedly continuing to charge consumers for their subscriptions even if they are canceled before they are set to renew.

Anderson argues that Gannett breaches its contract with consumers by allegedly continuing to charge for newspaper subscriptions that have been canceled.

“Defendant routinely fails to honor consumers’ requests to stop their newspaper subscriptions from automatically renewing and instead, continues to charge them subscription fees without their authorization in breach of the express terms of its contract,” the Gannett class action states.

Gannett class action alleges breach of contract, unjust enrichment

Anderson’s subscription to the Courier News was automatically renewed despite her canceling the subscription and receiving confirmation that it was done, the Gannett class action states.

“As a result of Defendant’s fraudulent conduct, Plaintiff paid nearly $10.00 in unauthorized charges from Defendant,” according to the Gannett newspaper renewal lawsuit.

Anderson claims Gannett is guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of contract and in violation of the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act

She demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

Anderson wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who continued to be charged for a Gannett-owned newspaper subscription despite already having canceled their subscription to that newspaper.

Additionally, she wants to represent a subclass of consumers who purchased a subscription to the Courier News and who were continued to be charged after they canceled their subscription.

In related news, last month, a judge ruled that a $6.7 million class action settlement between The Washington Post and consumers who say their subscriptions were unlawfully automatically renewed could move forward

I too am being charged for an account that was cancelled months ago. $11.99 multiple times a day, multiple days in a row. What should be my next move from here? Please let me know.

  2. Nancy Piltzecker says:

I was looking through my credit card bill and wanted to change a Gannett subscription to a different card. I looked on the subscription I do have and I pay the yearly price on that so that was a bit of a surprise. Then I realized that it was for a subscription that I cancelled months (maybe even years) ago. Not looking forward to calling on Monday but at least that will give me the info I need to cancel it on my credit card.

  3. Hadley Wilson says:

I just signed up for Rocket Money and saw they have been charging every month since 2021. I don’t even know what newspaper it would be because I’ve only ever subscribed to my local newspaper and cancelled it. I even just tried to sign into that Newspaper to check and it says there’s no account linked to my information. It’s more than $200.00 and I don’t know how to even cancel it now..

  4. Jill Jordan says:

    Going through this now. Infuriating

  5. Lynne L. Karty says:

I cancelled my accounts in 2020. I just found out they have been billing my husband’s card since that time. He assumed it was something I ordered. The customer service rep at Gannett refuses to refund any of the charges even though I was assured that the accounts with the Detroit Free Press and the FT Myers Press were both cancelled (at different times). They are true scam artists!

  6. russell craig says:

same charge, attempting to cancel but the phone number is not working

  7. Jenny Ruhman says:

The same thing here! I googled Gannett because I tried to cancel and dispute charges and they STILL keep charging me! Then I found all of you. I can’t even find the origination of why I am being charged. Sometimes I’m charged 9.99 2 days in a row?!

  8. David says:

Just noticed I was still being charged for a subscription I cancelled over 2 years ago, but I don’t use the account it was attached to frequently. Just keep depositing thinking Wells Fargo was charging a ridiculous amount for a monthly service fee.

  9. Taneisha Thomas says:

This has happened to me too.

  10. Sandra S says:

The same thing has happened to me!! I was being charged twice for several months and now am STILL being charged after I cancele the subscription back in Dec 2022! I don’t even know where to go next or what to do.
