Gannett newspaper renewal class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Nichole Anderson filed a class action lawsuit against Gannett Co., Inc.
  • Why: Anderson claims Gannett unlawfully renews newspaper subscriptions for consumers who have already canceled their subscription.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Gannett deceptively and unlawfully automatically renews the newspaper subscriptions of consumers who have already canceled their subscriptions, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Nichole Anderson claims Gannett acts in a “fraudulent” and “unconscionable” manner by allegedly continuing to charge consumers for their subscriptions even if they are canceled before they are set to renew.

Anderson argues that Gannett breaches its contract with consumers by allegedly continuing to charge for newspaper subscriptions that have been canceled.

“Defendant routinely fails to honor consumers’ requests to stop their newspaper subscriptions from automatically renewing and instead, continues to charge them subscription fees without their authorization in breach of the express terms of its contract,” the Gannett class action states.

Gannett class action alleges breach of contract, unjust enrichment

Anderson’s subscription to the Courier News was automatically renewed despite her canceling the subscription and receiving confirmation that it was done, the Gannett class action states.

“As a result of Defendant’s fraudulent conduct, Plaintiff paid nearly $10.00 in unauthorized charges from Defendant,” according to the Gannett newspaper renewal lawsuit.

Anderson claims Gannett is guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of contract and in violation of the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act

She demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

Anderson wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who continued to be charged for a Gannett-owned newspaper subscription despite already having canceled their subscription to that newspaper.

Additionally, she wants to represent a subclass of consumers who purchased a subscription to the Courier News and who were continued to be charged after they canceled their subscription.

In related news, last month, a judge ruled that a $6.7 million class action settlement between The Washington Post and consumers who say their subscriptions were unlawfully automatically renewed could move forward

I was billed last year and not only cancel the subscription but my debit card

  2. Michelle dawn Green says:

I am repeatedly billed for the Fayeteville Observer despite multiple cancel confirmations on the website.

  3. Jacqueline Guzzetta says:

Happens to me – Nonstop billing – no way to find out why – keeps occurring nonetheless.

  4. Kathryn Willever says:

My daughter was required to sign up for this paper 2 years ago for a class in college. Despite call after call, we still have an $8.99 charge every month auto drafted. How can I make this stop?????

  5. Lara White says:

I have called three or more times and waited on hold forever with Gannett and they tell me either they have canceled my account or they don’t show one under my name. Yet I keep getting a $9.99 charge every month. THIS IS Ridiculous. Worst company I have ever worked with. After disputing multiple times with my Credit card company they are now working to put a stop payment on Gannett for ALL future charges. I am hoping this works.

  6. Julie R Long says:

I’ve never signed up for any newspapers and yet I see a charge for $9.99 for Gannett. I called TWICE to cancel it, yet I still continue to get charged! I want my money back! Not even sure what product I’m supposedly paying for so definitely have been charged for a product I’ve never used nor will use

  7. Rodney L. Hurst says:

I was billed after I canceled my account and in one callthey claim they have no record, and another call they “found” my records, but now they claim it was done through a 3rd party when I contacted Gannett directly.

  8. John W. League says:

This happened to me with a digital subscription to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida. Called with a cancellation just before special offer expired. Clerk confirmed my info and said it was done. Then a monthly charge appeared on my credit card. Called Gannett to dispute and request a refund. When that was denied, I filed a complaint with the Florida Better Business Bureau. Gannett denied that it did anything wrong. As a former newspaper employee, I found it disgusting that the industry–or at least Gannett–has sunken to such depths. FYI: First time the BBB did not come through with one of my consumer complaints. Gannett just blew it off.

Ironically, I was cancelling because we were heading north for the season, and had planned to resubscribe when we returned to Florida. After this experience…never again.

  9. Lynn Holdsworth says:

I just blocked Gannett from charging my credit card any more. I’ve called repeatedly to get them to cancel my “subscription,” and advise them that I want all subscriptions to any and all of their papers stopped, but I continue to get charged $7.99 twice a month. Confirmation codes seem to mean nothing to this company. Today, when I called to cancel yet again, the computer (no person accessible) couldn’t even find an account associated with my phone number, despite Gannett having charged another $7.99 yesterday. I wonder if when I hit one of their paywalls, they just automatically resubscribe me rather than denying me access to the article. I’d be delighted to to be a class rep if you need more.

  10. Thomas Oram says:

I have been charged $9.99 per month since I canceled in April 2021. I have complained to the credit card company and cannot find a way to get in touch with Gannett.
