sunsetter awningsSunSetter has issued a recall for the vinyl covers of motorized awnings, over concerns that if the awning is activated while it’s secured, and the cover is then removed, the awning can open unexpectedly.

Reportedly, the awnings can open with such force that people standing in its path can be struck hard enough that they fall, become seriously injured, or even die.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes at affected covers include those used with the SunSetter Motorized, Motorized XL, Motorized PRO, Motorized PROXL, and Oasis Freestanding Motorized Retractable Awnings distributed by SunSetter between June 1999 and January 2019. The affected covers reportedly are supplied with bungee tie-downs.

The CPSC states that covers for manually operated awnings are not included in the recall.

The affected awnings were distributed through Costco Wholesale, were used in promotions, and were sold alone for $100. ABC says that the recall affects 270,000 units in the United States.

SunSetter recalled the covers after receiving 14 reports of incidents involving the covers. Reportedly, six people were injured by the awnings and one personal died.

Reportedly, a 73-year-old man was killed after he was hit by a motorized awning that opened unexpectedly while he attempted to remove the cover, causing him to fall off of a ladder and over a balcony.

The CPSC advises consumers to not attempt to install covers for their motorized awnings, or remove installed covers until they have received directions from SunSetter. SunSetter reportedly will provide consumers with free breakaway safety clips to replace the bungee tie-downs that come with the affected covers.

SunSetter has provided information for how consumers should install their safety clips. According to the CPSC, SunSetter is contacting consumers who are known to have purchased the devices.

The recall number for the SunSetter cover is 19-757.

SunSetter consumers are invited to report an incident involving the SunSetter cover on the CPSC’s website.

The CPSC notes that consumers can contact SunSetter by calling 844-313-0144 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET daily, online at www.sunsetter.com/safety-clips, or by email at Safety-Clips@SunSetter.com.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that federal law prohibits the sale of devices subject to a publicly announced voluntary recall implemented by the maker of the deice itself, or implemented by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Defective products are frustrating and can cause financial injury, but more seriously, they can pose a physical risk. Consumers rely on the products they purchase to be safe to operate and free from defects. However, this is not always the case.

If a product is found to be dangerous or defective, a company can issue a recall of a device, or the Consumer Product Safety Commission can issue a recall.

Recalls help to limit the danger of possibly defective products, and in some recalls, consumers can receive compensation for a defective products they purchased, in the form of a replacement, a refund, or another benefit.
