The Spalding recall notice was posted Sept. 22 on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website and applies to Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals.

Spalding recall says backboard can detach from pole and fall, causing injury
According to the Spalding basketball hoop recall, welds in the arm attaching the backboard to the pole can fail and cause the backboard to fall, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers.
So far, Russell Brands has received 26 reports of weld failures including three backboards separating from the pole.
One injury involved the backboard hitting a consumer on the shoulder/upper torso. Another consumer was injured after they were hit in the head, the company says.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the portable basketball goals and contact Spalding to arrange for a technician to remove the original arm and install a new arm on the goal system,” the Spalding recall says.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Spalding is contacting all known purchasers. The product was sold at Academy and Scheels stores nationwide and online at Spalding.com and Amazon.com from May 2021 through April 2022 for about between $400 and $600.
In other basketball news, earlier this month, the National Basketball Association was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it knowingly disclosed digital subscribers’ personal viewing information to Meta Platforms Inc.
