Old Europe Cheese issued a recall of its brie and camembert cheeses sold under several brands because of potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration posted the recall Sept. 30 on its website. It applies to all Old Europe Cheese brie and camembert products with best-by dates through Dec. 14, 2022, sold under brands including Joan of Arc, Reny Picot and Block and Barrel.

The company initiated the cheese recall after an audit of 120 samples, both of the product and of the company’s facilities.

“None of the products showed contamination, but one of the facilities’ samples tested positive,” Old Europe Cheese says. “The strain from that positive case has been linked to 6 cases of Listeriosis dating from 2017 to 2022.”

Products available at supermarkets, wholesale/retail stores, cheese recall states

Old Europe Cheese distributed the products from Aug. 1, 2022, through Sept. 28, 2022, to supermarkets and wholesale and retail stores nationwide and in Mexico. Retailers may have repackaged bulk Old Europe Cheese items into smaller containers and sold the repackaged product to consumers, the recall states.

“Consumers who have purchased the stated Brie and Camembert products are urged not to consume it and discard the product,” the cheese recall says.

The company stopped production and will not restart until it has full confidence that its new safety measures  are effective, Old Europe says.

Old Europe is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Whole Foods recalls Zerto Fontal cheese

Meanwhile, Whole Foods Market recalled Zerto Fontal cheese from 54 stores in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York because the product contains egg lysozyme, an egg white protein, which is not declared on the product label.

A customer who complained of illness discovered the mislabeling.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the Sept. 30 recall states.

The products were located in the Specialty department and packaged by the slice with Whole Foods Market scale labels. They can be identified by the name “Zerto Fontal,” a product code of 20565300000 and sell-by dates of 9/21/2022-10/20/2022.

The products were available for purchase from Sept. 21 to Sept. 29, 2022.

Customers who purchased the product at Whole Foods Market can take a valid receipt into stores for a full refund.

In related recall news, June, a variety of cheeses sold under different brands in nine states were recalled as they also may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
