Recall announced for fresh cantaloupe due to potential salmonella contamination

Cantaloupe recall overview: 

• Who: Sofia Produce LLC, doing business as Trufresh, recalled all sizes of its cantaloupes packaged in cardboard boxes labeled “Malichita” and sold between Oct. 16-23. 
• Why: The cantaloupes are potentially contaminated with salmonella.
• Where: The cantaloupes were distributed to Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida and Canada.

Sofia Produce LLC issued a cantaloupe recall for all sizes of the fruit packaged in cardboard boxes labeled “Malichita” and sold between Oct. 16-23 due to potential salmonella exposure.

The company, doing business as Trufresh, says it distributed the cantaloupes to Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida and Canada. 

The cantaloupe salmonella recall came after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced a similar recall of cantaloupes packaged with the same Malichita label.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses in children, frail and elderly people. Healthy people can experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the cantaloupe recall says.

The cantaloupes have a label where the top half is white with the word “Malichita” in black letters. The bottom is black and has the number “4050” in white letters with the words “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique.”

TruFresh asks customers to not consume cantaloupe, though no reports of illness 

Trufresh says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Consumers should not consume the cantaloupe. They can reach TruFresh representative Rafael Roiz from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT, Monday through Friday, at 520-394-7370.

Similarly, Eagle Produce announced a recall for 6,456 cases of whole cantaloupes last month after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered salmonella during testing.
