Libbey Milk Bottle recallThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Libbey Glass has recalled its 33.5 ounce milk bottles over concerns that the bottles can break and pose a laceration hazard.

The recall was implemented on Jan. 9, 2020 and affects around 44,300 units.

Consumers and foodservice establishments who purchased the affected bottles are eligible for replacement bottles or a voucher.

No injuries or incidents have been reported in connection with the recalled bottles.

The CPSC explains that the affected bottles are clear, colorless glass bottles that are around 8.5 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide. They have no markings, and can be identified by their original packaging.

The affected bottles have item number 92129 printed on the carton, along with a manufacturing date of either Aug. 15, 2019 or Aug. 31, 2019.

Consumers and foodservice establishments are advised to immediately stop using the affected milk bottles. They can contact Libbey Glass to receive a voucher or replacement bottles.

Libbey Glass can be contacted by phone between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday at 800-982-7063.

The recalled milk bottles were sold to multiple foodservice distributors, including the Wasserstrom Company and Edward Don & Company. The bottles were sold for around $2 per bottle.

The bottles were manufactured in China, and imported by Libbey Glass Inc. of Toledo, Ohio.

The CPSC invites consumers to report an incident regarding the product on the CPSC’s website. The recall number is 20-051.

Recalls like the Libbey Glass milk bottle recall can help protect consumers from injury caused by using a defective or dangerous product. Recalls can also protect consumers from financial injury. Consumers may unknowingly purchase a defective or useless product, wasting money in the process.

In addition, recalls that offer refunds or compensation for the recalled products can give consumers a chance to recuperate some of their financial losses, or receive a product that may be useful to them.

Recalls are an important way that companies are held accountable for producing and selling products that are safe and effective. Some recalls are implemented voluntarily, in partnership with a manufacturer, while others are ordered by the CPSC in an effort to best protect consumers.

Libbey Glass milk bottles are not the only beverage containers to be subjected to a recall recently. Hit Promotional Products conducted a voluntary recall of its ceramic mugs last October. The mugs were recalled over concerns that they can crack or break when exposed to hot liquids. Like the milk bottles, the cracked mugs can pose a laceration hazard. Additionally, consumers may be exposed to burns from hot liquids due to the mugs’ defect.
