Telluride recall overview:

  • Who: Kia is recalling more than 427,000 of its 2020-2024 Telluride vehicles.
  • Why: Improper supplier assembly could result in mechanical issues over time that cause the vehicle to move while in park, the automaker says.
  • Where: The Kia recall is valid across the United States.

A new recall has been issued for more than 427,000 2020-2024 Kia Telluride vehicles due to mechanical issues that can cause the vehicles to move despite being in park.

The Telluride rollaway issues impact all 2020-2023 Telluride vehicles and some of the 2024 vehicles that were manufactured between Jan. 9, 2019, and Oct. 19, 2023.

The Telluride recall stems from a supplier assembly issue issue that causes the vehicles’ intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft not to fully engage — which can lead to damaged shaft splines and ultimately cause the Telluride rollaway issues, Kia says.

The vehicles can move if the parking brake is not engaged, leading to an increased risk of crash, according to the Kia recall. Drivers of vehicles with the rollaway issues may hear a grinding noise and/or reduced motive power, the recall says.

Telluride rollaway issues will be fixed with updated software to engage parking brake, recall says

Kia did not say if there have so far been reports of injuries caused by the Telluride rollaway issues. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Kia dealers will be notified of the recall by May 13 and owners between May 15 and 17, according to the Telluride recall. Dealers will install updated electronic parking brake (EPB) software to automatically engage the EPB to prevent unintended vehicle movement.

Kia will reimburse prior expenses to fix the issues. Kia can be reached at 800-333-4542.

Hyundai, Kia and other defendants last fall agreed to a settlement of up to $145 million to resolve a class action lawsuit that Hyundai improperly manufactured certain Kia vehicles with design flaws that left them vulnerable to theft and damage.
