Townsend Farms announced a voluntary recall for specific frozen fruit products sold at Kroger in 16 states, as the products may contain mango chunks contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall June 28. It is linked to a recall from Sunrise Growers announced last week and applies to a variety of products containing mango sold at Kroger and other grocery stores. Visit the FDA’s website for specific product names and codes.
Frozen fruit recall affects retailers nationwide
On June 21, SunOpta Inc. announced its subsidiary, Sunrise Growers Inc., issued a voluntary recall of specific frozen fruit products linked to pineapple as they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.Â
U.S. food safety watchdogs immediately issued a warning asking consumers to check their freezers as the recall affected some of the largest retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.Â
Townsend Farms followed suit by voluntarily recalling specific frozen fruit products linked to mango chunks supplied by Sunrise Growers and distributed to Kroger Stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
The recalled products were also also sold in Baker’s, Dillons, Food 4 Less, FoodsCo, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less, Pick n’ Save, Ralphs, Ruler and Smith’s from Nov. 6, 2022, to March 16, 2023, according to the Kroger recall.
Consumer should not consume product, Kroger recall states
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, according to the frozen fruit recall.
Kroger notified affected retail customers and instructed them to remove any recalled product from retail store shelves and inventories, the recall states. It also advises customers to check their freezers for the recalled product, not to consume it and either to discard the product or return it to the store for a full refund.Â
Kroger is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
