Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator SUV Fire Risk Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Co. is recalling certain 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.
  • Why: A fire can start under the hood of the vehicles even when they are turned off.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Ford recalled certain 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs after a spate of under-hood fires in the vehicles that have already injured one person.

Ford Motor Co. issued an advisory for customers on its website May 19.

The recall applies to 39,013 Expedition and Navigator SUVs in the United States built between Dec. 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021.

Ford advises anyone with these vehicles to park them outside and away from structures while it investigates the cause of the fires, which can occur even when the vehicle is parked and off.

“Ford is treating this recall with a high sense of urgency and will communicate to customers — via FordPass and Lincoln Way app and mail — as soon as it finalizes the list of owners and addresses within the recalled vehicle population,” the notice states.

The recall comes in response to 16 reported incidents. Of the 16 incidents, 12 reportedly occurred while the vehicle was parked and off, one reportedly while the vehicle was parked and on and three reportedly while the vehicle was in motion.

Ford is aware of one reported injury, it said.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Ford Recall States No Cause for Issue Found Yet

Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving vehicles under this recall and is not aware of any accidents related to this issue, it said.

Ford began investigating the issue March 24 and has not yet established a cause of the issue.

It believes the incidents originate in the rear of the engine compartment near the passenger side of the vehicle.

Ford also has issued a recall for more than 250,000 of its Explorer vehicles over concerns they can roll away while in park due to a potentially defective rear axle mounting bolt.
