Rivian R1T Pickup Passenger Airbags Recall Overview:

  • Who: Electric truck maker Rivian has recalled 502 of its model year 2022 Rivian R1T pickup trucks.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles contain defective passenger seat airbags that may not deploy in the event a child or child seat is in the passenger seat.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Rivian has recalled 502 of its model year 2022 Rivian R1T pickup trucks over concerns with the vehicles’ front passenger seat airbags.

The recall was initiated after Rivian discovered the front passenger airbag may not deploy in the event a child or child seat is in the front passenger seat, according to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 10.

The electric truck maker says the recall does not affect all of its 2022 R1T pickup trucks, rather just ones manufactured between Sept. 21, 2021 and April 12, 2022.

R1T pickup trucks not manufactured during that time period were not manufactured with the suspect seat assemblies determined to be responsible for the defect, according to the Rivian recall.

Rivian says the issue could cause an increased risk of injury for infants in a child seat or a child seated in the passenger seat in the event of an accident.

Vehicle owners can be made aware if their R1T pickup truck is affected by the defect by paying attention to the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF lamp or if the passenger seat belt notification chimes even if the seat is empty, according to the Rivian recall.

Rivian Says It Will Replace Passenger Seats Free of Charge

Rivian says it is remedying the issue by replacing the passenger seats in affected R1T pickup trucks at no cost to vehicle owners.

The electric truck maker says it will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles to not place children or use child seats in the passenger seat as soon as possible and will begin mailing out notifications on or before July 1.

Another electric car manufacturer, Tesla, recalled almost 130,000 of its vehicles last month over concerns their infotainment central processing units were prone to overheating.
