Ford has initiated a recall of more than 175,000 five-door Bronco SUVs due to an issue with their front seat belts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall May 18. It applies to 175,550 2021-2023 model year five-door Broncos made from Sept. 23, 2020, through May 9, 2023.

According to the recall, the first-row seat belt latch plates may be difficult to access from their stowed position, making them incompliant with federal safety standards.

The current design can make it difficult for the driver and front passenger to reach the belts when the seats are in certain positions due to the clearance between the seat back and the interior trim, the Ford Bronco recall says.

“Difficulty accessing the seat belt latches may result in occupants not wearing their seat belts, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” it says.

The recall does not affect two-door Bronco models.

Ford to repair issue for free, according to Bronco recall

No accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported so far, Ford says.

Ford is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

To resolve the issue, dealers will add a sliding clip latch stop to the driver and front passenger seat belts free of charge, the Ford recall says.

Ford expects to mail owner notification letters June 30, 2023.

The company told the NHTSA it is “investigating the causal factors related to the noncompliance.”

Meanwhile, a recent class action lawsuit alleges Ford sells two models of cars that leak fuel into the exhaust, leading to fire under the hood.
