Al kanater Tahini Recall Overview:

  • Who: International Golden Foods is recalling certain lots of its Al kanater brand tahini
  • Why: The tahini may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Where: The product was sold nationwide

Jars of tahini paste distributed nationwide are being recalled, as they may contain Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections.

The recall notice was posted Nov. 30 on the United States Food & Safety Administration website and applies to certain lot codes of Al kanater brand tahini made by Illinois company International Golden Foods, Inc.

The potential contamination was revealed as a result of a random sampling by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, the recall notice says.

No Illnesses Have Been Reported, But Customers Should Discontinue Use

Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the FDA says.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the tahini, and the company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The tahini was distributed nationwide in 16 Oz. jars. The jars are labelled โ€œAl kanater Tahini.โ€ Lot codes are printed on the jar, with the recalled lot code available here.

โ€œConsumers who have purchased Al kanater Tahini with these lot codes should discontinue use and return it to the store of purchase for a full refund,โ€ the notice says.

In 2019, Blue Apron faced a class action lawsuit alleging it did not offer a refund after one of its tahini products was contaminated with Salmonella.
