Consumers and online marketplaces are being urged to pay attention to a 2021 recall of newborn loungers as two more babies have died in the loungers since the initial recall.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Boppy Company issued a notice June 6 urging consumers to stop using the recalled Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers.

In 2021, The Boppy Company issued a massive recall covering more than 3.3 million of its pillow loungers meant for infants due to a suffocation hazard.

At the time, the company said it had received eight reports of infant deaths associated with The Boppy Company Newborn Lounger products.

Shortly after the Sept. 2021 recall, two additional infants died in the newborn loungers.

One death occurred in Oct. 2021 when an infant was reportedly placed on the lounger for sleep and then rolled underneath a nearby adult pillow. The cause of death was positional asphyxia. In Nov. 2021, an infant was placed in an adult bed with a parent and soft bedding and was later found deceased on the lounger, the notice says. The cause of death was undetermined.

CPSC urges marketplaces to remove the recalled products from sites

The Newborn Loungers have not been legal for sale since they were recalled, but since then, CPSC and Boppy have sent numerous requests to Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to remove the recalled products that continue to appear for sale on their sites, the notice says.

It is unlawful to offer for sale a CPSC recalled product on an online marketplace or to sell or donate a recalled product in any other manner.

Consumers can contact The Boppy Company for instructions on how to dispose of the product and get a refund. Go to boppy.com and click “Product Recalls” for more information.

One thought on CPSC, Boppy Company warn customers to stop using newborn loungers following additional deaths

  1. Katie Stanley says:

I have (3) Boppys I was listing to sell on Facebook’s marketplace, but Facebook did the right thing and removed my post the minute it went live. I wasn’t aware of the recall until I reached out to Facebook to find out why they deleted my post for the Boppys. I’ll be reaching out to Boppy today to see how they want me to dispose of them and possibly get a refund.
