Toos Elite Electric Scooters warning overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned consumers to stop using Toos Elite 60-volt electric scooters.
  • Why: The agency is concerned the scooters are not certified to meet safety standards and could pose a fire risk, following the death of two individuals in an apartment fire that has been attributed to the devices.
  • Where: The agency’s warning was made to consumers nationwide.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety (CPSC) warned consumers Monday to immediately stop using Toos Elite 60-volt electric scooters after two individuals died in an apartment fire caused by a lithium-ion battery in the device.

The electric scooters were sold exclusively under the brand-names “Zooz” and “Toos” at Toos Urban Ride retail locations in New York and on the company’s website, according to the CPSC warning

The warning comes in the wake of a New York City apartment fire in April that claimed the life of two individuals — including a 7-year-old boy — and that was attributed by local fire officials to a Toos Elite 60-volt scooter that was being charged by a 48-volt charger sold by Toos.

Toos Urban Ride refuses to recall 60-volt electric scooters, CPSC says

The CPSC claims Toos Urban Ride has “refused to conduct an acceptable recall”; the CPSC also notes that the mobility device “has not been certified by an accredited laboratory to the applicable UL safety standard.”

“While the exact cause of the battery’s ignition in the fatal fire has yet to be determined, and due to the lack of safety testing or certification by an accredited laboratory, CPSC recommends that consumers stop using the Toos Elite 60-volt scooters regardless of the charger,” the agency said.

The CPSC released a report earlier this month on injuries connected to electric mobility devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters, with data revealing such injuries went up 21% from 2021 to 2022 and have been trending up each year by 23% on average since 2017.
