BMW announced a recall for more than 11,000 new iX xDrive50 and iX M60 vehicles as the cruise control on the vehicles can unintentionally activate, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall June 7. It applies to 11,180 iX xDrive50 and iX M60 vehicles with model years 2022-2024.

According to the recall, there is the possibility the driver of these vehicles may unintentionally activate the cruise control system while turning the steering wheel at low speeds, resulting in a sudden increase of vehicle speed.

“If the system is accidentally reactivated, this could lead to a slight unexpected speed increase,” the BMW cruise control recall states. “In rare cases, if the driver did not deactivate the system, then depending upon traffic and road conditions, this could increase the risk of a crash.”

The driver can deactivate the system by either depressing the brake pedal or pressing the cruise control “off” button, according to the recall.

BMW offers free fix to affected drivers, recall states

BMW has been investigating the issue since late 2022, the recall states.

During an engineering review, the automaker identified five NHTSA customer complaints and seven BMW customer complaints involving BMW iX models that occurred between late 2022 and the date of the recall, the notice states.

BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue so far, the cruise control recall says. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

To fix the issue, dealers will update the vehicle software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 28, 2023.

In May, BMW recalled 51 vehicles, including 41 SUVs, that were manufactured with front seat frames that may not have been appropriately welded to the seat rails.
