The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Zippo is recalling its Ronson Brand Tech Torch because it poses a possible fire hazard.
The CPSC explains that the torch recall started on Oct. 8, 2019, over concerns that it can continue to release a flame even after the activation trigger is put into the off position.
The CPSC says that the device was recalled after Zippo received 36 reports of the device’s flame continuing to be lit even after the activation trigger was turned off. One of these cases allegedly included minor property damage.
The Ronson torch recall affects around 660,000 units in the U.S. and another 98,000 in Canada.
The device is described as a red utility lighter that comes with a Ronson butane fuel can. The torch has a black rubber handle and black trigger. The device is printed with Ronson on the top of the torch and Tech Torch on the base.
Customers who purchased the Ronson Tech Torch are advised to immediately stop using it. Customers who purchased the device are eligible for a gift card to refund their purchase of the affected torch.
Customers can contact the Ronson Tech Torch recall hotline at the toll free number 800-407-0377 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Customers can email the company at CR@RonsonRecall.com and can find more information about the recall on RonsonRecall.com.
The CPSC says that the Ronson Tech Torch was sold in stores around the country including Ace Hardware and Walmart, as well as through Zippo.com and Amazon.com, between February 2010 and July 2019 for between $30 and $40.
The torch was manufactured in Taiwan and imported by Zippo Manufacturing Company of Bradford, Pa.
The recall number for the Ronson Brand Tech Torch is 20-007.
Customers are invited to report an incident involving the product on the CPSC website.
The CPSC explains that the recall was conducted voluntarily by Zippo, as part of the CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process in an effort to best protect consumers.
The Ronson Brand Tech Torch recall is not the only recall of tools that the CPSC has announced recently. Earlier this month, the CPSC reported that Harbor Freight Tools announced a recall of folding knives that reportedly do not lock and can pose a possible injury hazard.
Recalls like the Ronson Tech Torch recall and the Harbor Freight Tools folding knife recall can help protect customers from possibly dangerous products.

Humm, 36 reports & Zippo recalls 660,000 units. I’ve owned several other hand held Butane devices and in my opinion Ronson Tech Torch was the cream of the crop! It appears this is much more about creating a class action lawsuit than protecting the public. There’s a TON of competitors butane torches that don’t come close to the quality of the Ronson. Of course the other No-Name / off brand don’t have the deep pockets so the claimants “think” Zippo has the deep pockets. I for one will miss this product! In my opinion the Ronson Tech Torch was the best buy available. Again, lets examine the numbers – 36 “One (1) MINOR INJURY/PROPERTY” OUT OF AT LEAST – 660,000 UNITS. Doesn’t this calculate as – 0.000054545 % “possible failure(s)? More importantly; can anyone ABSOLUTELY PROVE the 36 incident units were not; 1.)HEAVILY USED & WORE OUT? 2.)ABUSED OR 3.)USED IMPROPERLY??? Hopefully the Judge sees this for the “money grab lawsuit” it is & throws this nonsense lawsuit right out of court! Another example of why attorneys get such an “undeserved” bad rap. How in the world did someone manage to have property damaged even if the torch is/was defective?
I say – we cannot litigate to prevent stupidity! Put this fair Priced fine product back on the market!
Just my humble opinion,
Douglas Swinhart
