raw chicken recallSimmons Prepared Foods, located in Arkansas, has recalled more than 2 million pounds of poultry that might be contaminated with foreign material, possibly metal.

The possible contamination was discovered by Simmons Prepared Foods and affects poultry items that were produced from Oct. 21, 2019 through Nov. 4, 2019, according to a press release from the Food and Drug Administration.

“The products subject to recall bear establishment number ‘P-1949,’ ‘P- 486’ or ‘P-5837’ inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutions in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania,” the FDA states.

The FDA mentions that there have been no verified reports of any bad reactions due to anyone eating these products and that and that anyone who is concerned should contact their doctor.

The Food Safety and Service Inspection Service (FSIS) department of the FDA is worried that some of the poultry may be frozen in institutional freezers, the FDA press release notes. The poultry should be not be served and should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, according to the FDA.

An article in the New York Times mentions that in January, Tyson Foods recalled around 36,000 pounds of chicken nuggets because the company found rubber in the food.

In addition, in March, Tyson recalled over 69,000 pounds of frozen strips after customers claimed that they found pieces of metal in their chicken.

The FDA states that it routinely discusses effectiveness checks to make sure that recalling companies notify their customers of the recall and to make sure that steps are made to make sure that the products are no longer available to consumers.

Simmons Prepared Foods, in a statement, said, “Food safety is a very serious matter at Simmons. That is why Simmons has issued a precautionary and voluntary recall of approximately 2 million pounds of fresh and frozen chicken products due to the potential to contain extraneous material, specifically metal.”

The FDA recall was classified as a “Class I,” which means that it is a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” according to the FDA.

The statement from Simmons Prepared Foods also noted, “Simmons Foods’ values the trust our customers place in us to deliver quality products that are safe. When something happens that is potentially inconsistent with this promise to our customers, it will always require careful and constant review to maintain our commitment to food safety.”

Consumers who have questions about the recall should contact Donald Miller, who is senior vice president of sales at Simmons Prepared Foods. He can be reached at (888) 831-7007.

In addition, anyone with food safety questions should call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline or send an email to MPHotline@usda.gov.
