Goat’s milk and other powdered formula products made by Designed by Nature of California have not been properly tested and do not contain nutrients infants require, warns a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notice

The recall includes three Designed by Nature formula products that are mislabeled, including Goat’s Milk Powder, Cow’s Milk Powder, and Base Milk Powder formulas. The recalled goat’s milk and other formulas were sold online, directly to consumers, and have expiration dates between May 01, 2021, and June 11, 2022, which can be found on the bottom of the product.

The labeling on the goat’s milk powdered formulas does not clearly indicate that the products are not intended for infants under 12 months old, says the FDA’s recall notice, which may mislead parents into feeding them to their babies.

The Designed by Nature products do not contain multiple nutrients required in infant formulas, warns the agency. Further, Designed by Nature goat’s milk formula products have not been tested for Cronobacter, a pathogen that presents a severe risk to babies under 12 months of age.

The recall notice says that no reports of injuries or illnesses have been made yet.

Infant formulas are defined as “a food which purports to be or is represented for special dietary use solely as a food for infants by reason of its simulation of human milk or its suitability as a complete or partial substitute for human milk,” says the FDA. Infant formulas must meet the requirements of the Infant Formula Act – Designed by Nature products are not intended or approved for infants.

The company, which describes its products as “nutritious, simple and wholesome formulas” on its website, says it will be relabeling its goat’s milk and other powders.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other baby product recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
