An airbag warning light that may not warn drivers of a problem has led GM to recall 285,000 late model Buicks, Escalades, Cadillacs, Chevrolet Corvettes, Tahoes, and Yukons.
The airbag indicator light can malfunction in the recalled vehicles, reports Cars.com, lighting up at incorrect times and potentially failing to warn owners of an issue. The problem is with the communications gateway module, which may incorrectly process information from a diagnostic part. GM says the issue is a vehicle safety problem because the owner may be unaware that there is an issue with the airbag, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
The recall covers 2021 models of the following vehicles:
- Buick Envision SUV
- Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans
- Escalade and Escalade ESV SUVs
- Chevrolet Corvette sports car
- Tahoe and Suburban SUVs
- GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs
Owners can either take their vehicles to a dealer for a free update to the communications gateway model or the update will be sent automatically, says the recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the reasons behind the GM faulty airbag light recall are different, the part involved has become a commonly cited vehicle safety defect – the airbag. The most notorious airbag recall concerns Takata.
Vehicles from 19 different automotive makers spanning over 10 years have been included in the Takata airbag recalls. The NHTSA reports that approximately 67 million airbags are included in the recalls and that number continues to grow with more than 150,000 vehicles recalled by Ford due to Takata defects.
Consumers can check to see if their vehicles are a part of the GM faulty airbag warning light recall or another safety defect recall by visiting the NHTSA website and entering their 17-digit vehicle identification number.
