Hershey Recalls Chocolate Shell Topping Bottles Mistakenly Filled With Nuts

The Hershey Company is recalling certain bottles of its Hershey’s Chocolate Shell Topping after discovering 1,700 bottles were filled with a different type of topping that contains almonds.

The chocolate giant issued the recall Wednesday, with the notice shared on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

Hershey is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

The recall affects Hershey’s Chocolate Shell Topping in 7.25-oz. (205g) bottles with the UPC 346000. The affected bottles were mistakenly filled with Heath Shell Topping, Hershey said.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” Hershey’s said in the recall. No consumer has reported being injured by the error so far, according to the recall.

The filling mishap allegedly arose due to an “isolated error” at a contract manufacturing facility, and that it has taken “immediate steps” to stop it from happening again.

The products were shipped nationwide between April 15 and May 3 this year, and have the product code 25JSAS1. Hershey has instructed all retailers that received the affected product to immediately remove it from store shelves.

Consumers who have bought the topping should not consume it, and should instead contact Hershey for a full refund on 1-866-528-6848 or by visiting the Hershey’s website

The chocolatier said Chocolate Shell Topping products that were purchased before April 15 are not being recalled. No other shell topping flavors were known to be affected.

Meanwhile, Hershey is one of a number of chocolate makers facing class action lawsuits alleging its former workers were trafficked and forced into child labor to produce cocoa.

In one class action, eight plaintiffs claim that they were taken across the border as children to the Cote D’Ivoire and enslaved at cocoa farms that work to feed the demands of major United States chocolate makers.
