Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company has recalled around 51,000 packages of its Simply Nourish frozen dog food after finding it contained elevated levels of Vitamin D.
The Monroe, Wash.-based company announced on Aug. 13 that pet owners should immediately stop serving the dog food.
“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss,” says the statement released through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Consuming high amounts of Vitamin D can lead to serious health problems for dogs, including the possibility of renal failure, warns the agency.
The Wet Noses Dog Treat statement recommends that any dogs who have consumed the frozen dog food and are experiencing symptoms should be seen by a veterinarian.
Wet Noses Dog Treats Products Recalled
The affected products were the Wet Noses Dog Treat’s 2lb and 4.5lb varieties of Frozen Chicken & Veggies, Frozen Beef & Barley, Frozen Turkey & Sweet Potato, and Frozen Pork & Veggies. The dog food was distributed at PetSmart locations nationwide.
Wet Noses Dog Treat says no illnesses have been reported and that the high Vitamin D levels were discovered during a routine nutrition test done by the company. The brand claims subsequent tests revealed the cause was a communication failure between the company and the vitamin mix manufacturer.
“We care deeply about our customers and their pets, and have put corrective actions into place to ensure this issue does not reoccur,” the company said.
Wet Noses Dog Treat is offering a full refund for consumers who return the dog food to its place of purchase.
The recall is on the heels of another done by Sunshine Mills Dog Food, which posted a recall notice in July after discovering a toxic mold contamination.
