Treats intended for backyard poultry like ducks, chickens, and turkeys could be exposing bird owners to salmonella.
Missouri’s Manna Pro Products is recalling one lot of its Flock Party Quack Snacks after discovering it could be contaminated with salmonella, it announced on the US Food and Drug Administration website Tuesday.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
Manna Pro said the state of West Virginia turned up a positive result for salmonella in a routine surveillance sample of Flock Party Quack Snacks.
The recalled product has a best by date of 12/2023, and was packaged in 1.68-pound bags. The product was distributed nationwide from Feb. 2, 2021, at a range of retailers.
While it is common for chickens to carry salmonella and not become sick, the bacteria does pose a risk to humans. According to the recall, humans handling contaminated products can become infected and suffer symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.
In rare cases, salmonella can result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
“Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers,” the recall says.
Distribution of the treats for chickens has been suspended while Manna Pro investigates the contamination source, it says.
The company said anyone in possession of the treats with the best by date of December 2023 should stop feeding the product immediately, throw the product away, and contact Manna Pro for a full refund.
Meanwhile, Avanti Frozen Foods has also issued a recall for frozen cooked shrimp sold nationwide after six consumers reported falling ill after consuming the products, according to a notice issued last Friday. Click here for more details.
