General Mills Lucky Charms FDA Investigation:
- Who: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it is looking into consumer complaints of gastrointestinal issues after eating General Mills Lucky Charms cereal.
- Why: The FDA said it is responding to consumer complaints on the website iwaspoisoned.com.
- Where: The complaints are nationwide.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking into possible contamination of certain boxes of General Mills’ Lucky Charms Cereal after more than 100 people complained on a consumer food safety website that they got sick after consuming the cereal.
Over the last week, consumers have been posting about being sickened by the cereal on iwaspoisoned.com, complaining of a range of gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
The website says it is a “consumer-led website for diners to report suspected food poisoning or bad food experiences.”
Some of the complainants reported their children becoming sick after eating the cereal.
“My 11-year-old son was sick after he ate Lucky Charms,” one parent said on the website. “He was nauseated and almost threw up.”
“I ate the cereal then had horrible abdominal pain with diarrhea. I was in so much pain I broke out in a sweat. Was exhausted for days later,” another complained on the site.
Lucky Charms Complaints Investigated by FDA
Now the FDA is responding to the reports, saying it is aware of the complaints and is looking into the matter.
“The FDA takes seriously any reports of possible adulteration of a food that may also cause illnesses or injury,” the administration told Fox8. “Depending on the seriousness of the problem, an FDA investigator may visit the person who made the complaint, collect product samples and initiate inspections.”
It said complaints of a less serious nature or those that appear to be isolated incidents are monitored, and the information may be used during a future inspection of a company to help the FDA identify problem areas in a production plant. The complaints are also discussed with company management during these inspections.
Meanwhile, the FDA said it hosts its own food safety reporting system, and, since 2004, it has received 41 reports related to Lucky Charms. However, the FDA said it has also received no calls at its Food and Cosmetic Information Center related to Lucky Charms.
General Mills told the New York Post it didn’t believe the cereal was making people sick.

Add me please. My husband and I used to eat lots of Lucky Charms until we stated experiencing terrible belly pains and cramps.
Noticed the past couple of monthes after my evening bowl kind of got an upset stomach for about an hour
OMG! Never realized that it was the cereal that made me sick! My hubby & I usually have cereal before bed, and twice I got up in the middle of the night and spent much time in the bathroom! I thought it was a bug or something I ate for dinner, but when hubby got sick that noight too (he ate different food at dinner), I should have put 2 and 2 together. This is crazy! I often give the marshmallows and cereal to my parrot as a treat!
I had no idea! A week ago I purchased one of the $1-$1.50 two serving size bags of Lucky Charms. I ate some as a midnight snack and almost IMMEDIATELY after finishing had terrible cramping and diarrhea for several days. I thought nothing of it, maybe a “bug” or something. A couple of days ago I purchased another bag of Lucky Charms cereal and ate it as a quick “lunch” chasing after my two and a half year old godson. Again, within an hour had terrible gastrointestinal pain along with the same type of diarrhea and am still nauseated and unable to currently eat anything solid due to the pain spiking (my stomach apparently boycotting anything forcing it to digest something) and having to painfully, nauseatingly, time-consumingly, while heavily and profusely perspiring for some reason, post up in the bathroom and/or turn around and have to go right back to the back to the bathroom!!! Lucky Charms is my FAVE cereal. I would have never ever guessed or put it together it was the cereal, but I was wondering what I had eaten, twice, that had to be the cause of this! What if I had fed that to my two and a half year old?! 😱
My dad and daughter have experienced nausea and vomiting after eating Lucky Charms.
My husband first had diahhrea after eating Lucky Charms my daughter bought for him as a gag Christmas gift in 12/21. Two weeks later, after eating it again, he vomited.
We love the taste of Lucky Charms but my daughter, my husband & I all get terrible stomach pains and bowel problems after eating it – every time!
