Update:

  • WanaBana is recalling all lots of its WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches due to reported elevated lead levels.
  • The recall comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration previously issued an advisory against purchasing the pouches.
  • The pouches are distributed as WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree in three-pack pouches of 2.5 ounces.
  • The pouches are also distributed independently as Schnucks Apple Sauce 90g pouches with cinnamon with lot Nos. 05023:19, 09023:22 and 09023:24 or as Weis Cinnamon Apple Sauce 90g with lot No. 05023:28.
  • WanaBana is working with the FDA to determine the cause of the lead contamination after four reports of illnesses.
  • North Carolina governmental entities investigated and found the pouches had elevated levels of lead that could result in acute toxicity.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers not to buy or feed WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches to toddlers or young kids over concerns the products contain elevated levels of lead. 

The FDA warning applies to WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Puree Pouches with all lot codes and expiration dates, according the notice

The WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Puree Pouches are sold nationally by a number of retailers, including Sam’s Club, Dollar Tree and Amazon, according to the FDA. 

FDA advises blood tests for children, toddlers who ate WanaBana pouches

The FDA says toddlers and young children who consumed WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Puree Pouches should receive a blood test. 

WanaBana agreed to voluntarily recall all lots of the pouches, according to the FDA advisory. 

The FDA is continuing to work with state officials and the firm, collecting additional information and taking steps to remove all contaminated product from the market,” the administration says. 

In related news, the FDA released proposed guidance in January aimed at reducing the levels of toxic heavy metals children and babies are exposed to in their food. 

The guidance applies to baby food packaged in jars, pouches, tubs and boxes and came in the wake of a federal report that found a number of baby food makers allowed high levels of heavy metals in their products.
