The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has identified retailers in 10 states which may have sold the affected raw turkey products. The list of stores identified by the FSIS is available on the TCA Jennie O ground turkey recall investigation page.
The Jennie O ground turkey recall was initiated in response to a wider salmonella outbreak. This outbreak started in November 2017 and has been linked to raw turkey in 35 states affecting 164 people. One person in California has died in relation to the salmonella outbreak.
A variety of agencies including FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Arizona Department of Health Services conducted tests on Jennie O turkey found in a patient’s home and found salmonella that reportedly matched the strain associated with the salmonella outbreak.
There are a variety of steps that consumers can take to avoid salmonella infection. The CDC has provided a variety of tips for consumers, including:
- Wash hands before and after preparing or eating food.
- Thaw turkey in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
- Prevent the spread of germs from food preparation areas.
- Cook raw turkey and reheat leftovers thoroughly to a temperature of 165 °F. Use a thermometer to confirm the temperature.
- Do not feed raw food to pets.
Symptoms of a salmonella infection usually show up between 12 and 72 hours after exposure. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Special care should be taken in children under five and adults older than 65, as they may be more vulnerable to salmonella poisoning.
If symptoms of a salmonella infection become too severe, hospitalization may be required. If left untreated, a salmonella infection may lead to death. However, with prompt medical attention and antibiotic treatment, severe outcomes can usually be avoided.
