Aldi Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing Recall Overview:

  • Who: Drew’s Organics, LLC is voluntarily recalling one lot code of Aldi Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing.
  • What: The recall is being held due to a processing issue that could allow for microbial growth.
  • Where: The recall affects product in multiple states.

A batch of Aldi Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing has been pulled from the shelves by its parent company Drew’s Organics, LLC. due to a processing issue that could allow for microbial growth in the product.

In the recall notice, Drew’s Organic said no illnesses had been reported in relation to the recall, which was initiated after the company observed a color difference in the Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing after manufacturing.

The investigation revealed the pH level was out of balance, which left the potential for microbial growth, including Clostridium botulinum. This finding rendered the product unsafe for consumption, the recall notice states.

The recalled dressings comes in a 12 fl. oz. glass bottle with the Best if Used By date of Feb 15 2023, and UPC #4099100023169.  The lot code is printed on the shoulder of the bottle above the label.

It was distributed to select Aldi stores between August 20 and September 10 in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic, rod-shaped spore forming bacterium that produces a protein with characteristic neurotoxicity.

Botulism, a severe form of food poisoning results when the toxin-containing foods are ingested. Although this food illness is rare, its mortality rate is high; the 962 recorded botulism outbreaks in the United States from 1899 to 1990 involved 2320 cases and 1036 deaths, the agency said.

The company is urging consumers to stop using the dressing and return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.
