HP Laptop Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Danielle Greenberg filed a class action lawsuit against HP Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges that HP misled consumers about the quality and functionality of several of its laptops.
  • Where: The lawsuit is pending in Florida federal court.

Several of HP’s laptops have display hinges that are defective in that they break off from the poorly secured mounting points at the base of the device, a new class action lawsuit claims.

“The class laptops all possess a material defect that prevents them from being used as portrayed in HP’s advertising materials, and HP concealed, failed to disclose or otherwise engaged in deceptive marketing with respect to this defect,” the lawsuit states. “As a result, many consumers purchased computers that became practically unusable after just months of use.”

The defect occurs during ordinary use of the machine when the hinges separate from the device, snap or otherwise fail, the lawsuit states. This ultimately prevents the laptop from closing or opening. The destabilized hinges also render the devices too fragile for transport. Moreover, the damage to the hinge results in the screen, and its contents sitting in a tilted position.

The affected laptops include Envy Laptops, Envy 360 Laptops, Pavilion Laptops, Pavilion 360 Laptops and the HP 14, HP 15 and HP 17 Laptops.

“The class laptops are not fit for their intended purpose as functioning, compact, portable or flexible computers and cannot satisfy the representations HP made in its marketing materials and warranties,” the lawsuit states.

The plaintiff, on behalf of herself and class members, seeks a declaration that HP violated the Florida statutes; a declaration that HP was unjustly enriched by its conduct; monetary and statutory damages; restitution; injunctive relief; disgorgement of all monies received by HP as a result of the alleged acts and practices; penalties as provided by law; treble damages; a permanent injunction enjoining HP from continuing the alleged acts and practices; pre- and post-judgment interest; and reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses.

Samsung recently faced a similar lawsuit over its Chromebook Plus portable computers.

Add me to the list also. My 17 inch HP broke just a few months after having bought it. The hinge by the plug in broke. I sent it off and had it repaired. The same hinge broke again after I got it back. The plug in barely works now. The hinge was binding and very hard to open. Now I have glue and packing tape holding it together. For over a thousand dollars you would expect a lot more !

I bought an HP 17 laptop in Sept 2022. Five months later it was making a loud clicking noise when opening or closing. I did some research on line and found a very good video of a technician showing step by step how to disassemble it and repair the hinge damage. Beside the detailed repair procedure he seems to have located the root cause of the problem. The hinge assembly is held together by a lock nut. How much you tighten that nut determines how tight or loose the hinge will be. The factory may have overtightened these nuts initially however according to the tech they will slowly tighten themselves as you open and close the screen. When the hinge gets too tight it will put too much strain on the mounting screws that are only held in plastic and the plastic will break. In the video he shows how to repair the broken plastic with epoxy. The problem is if he’s correct about the nut self tightening over time it will break again at some point. I believe the long term solution is to put some Locktite or similar thread sealer on the threads of the nut and it’s mating shaft. This should prevent the nut from moving from it’s initial setting. Having seen how involved the repair is I’ve decided to use the laptop as a desktop and not open or close it. I shut it down when not in use. I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet which I’ve purchased a wireless keyboard and mouse for and that will be my travel unit from now on. I’m done with HP.

Don’t know why it would be dismissed I got one in my closet right now total junk one side tries to open the other side broke

  6. Barry Wingate says:

This is the second 17in HP Pavilion laptop where the hinge has failed. This most recent laptop has remained on a desk and was only closed when not in use. I still have the first failed hinge laptop if needed for review.
This is just a poor design and faulty construction…A “Lemon Law” should be in effect.

I bought an HP 17″ Laptop, Product number: 6GR94UA#ABA Serial number: ……3RHB I had two months and it had to be sent back to HP because the frame was loose by the screen. I bought a 3 year warranty. Recently, a tech went to change battery. Both hinges had pulled up and now tape holds the case together. (Total time moved on site-3 days. Never closed. )

My second lap top computer made by HP that the hinges broke!!! It started with the hinge by the charging port!!! The same as my first HP lap top!!! Then the other side hinge broke, while I was charging the computer, that ended up ripping out the charging port!!! Now the computer battery went dead, wit no way to charge it and copy all my saved information on the computer!!! Now I am forced to pay extra for a computer store to copy my hard drive!!! Then buy another laptop!!! This was on the weekend ending January 29 2023
I don’t know who can pay over $600.00 every couple of years?!?!?! And I know the first HP laptop did not last that long!!!
Shame on you HP what a disgrace!!!

  9. Jennifer Dauer says:

I have an HP envy that has a broken hinge. I can’t open or close the laptop. It’s basically useless. I did not drop it or damage it in anyway. Hinge broke when I simply opened it.

  10. Lisa George says:

I have a HP 17 and the hinges have made it inoperable. I finally took it to a repairman, and he told me that there aren’t replacement parts and really can’t be fixed.
