HP Laptop Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Danielle Greenberg filed a class action lawsuit against HP Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges that HP misled consumers about the quality and functionality of several of its laptops.
  • Where: The lawsuit is pending in Florida federal court.

Several of HP’s laptops have display hinges that are defective in that they break off from the poorly secured mounting points at the base of the device, a new class action lawsuit claims.

“The class laptops all possess a material defect that prevents them from being used as portrayed in HP’s advertising materials, and HP concealed, failed to disclose or otherwise engaged in deceptive marketing with respect to this defect,” the lawsuit states. “As a result, many consumers purchased computers that became practically unusable after just months of use.”

The defect occurs during ordinary use of the machine when the hinges separate from the device, snap or otherwise fail, the lawsuit states. This ultimately prevents the laptop from closing or opening. The destabilized hinges also render the devices too fragile for transport. Moreover, the damage to the hinge results in the screen, and its contents sitting in a tilted position.

The affected laptops include Envy Laptops, Envy 360 Laptops, Pavilion Laptops, Pavilion 360 Laptops and the HP 14, HP 15 and HP 17 Laptops.

“The class laptops are not fit for their intended purpose as functioning, compact, portable or flexible computers and cannot satisfy the representations HP made in its marketing materials and warranties,” the lawsuit states.

The plaintiff, on behalf of herself and class members, seeks a declaration that HP violated the Florida statutes; a declaration that HP was unjustly enriched by its conduct; monetary and statutory damages; restitution; injunctive relief; disgorgement of all monies received by HP as a result of the alleged acts and practices; penalties as provided by law; treble damages; a permanent injunction enjoining HP from continuing the alleged acts and practices; pre- and post-judgment interest; and reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses.

Samsung recently faced a similar lawsuit over its Chromebook Plus portable computers.

  1. Louis Knight says:

HP 17z hinges on both sides failed. Top cover and base enclosure shattered. Very poor design. Machine is cannot be used. Used 1-3 times per week. Cost of repair more than it is worth.

    1. Kathy Stefani says:

Same thing here. $550 for it. Sent it in to be repaired and it broke again. Now I need to buy another laptop. No more HP. It’s just Chinese junk.

    2. Justine Moore says:

My HP pavilion laptop hinges broke on mine and I ended up having my friend take two screws to screw it together to keep it up because they they broke off which is stupid because it was brand new and I couldn’t just send my laptop in because I needed it for school

  2. Melissa Garnett says:

Does anyone know why this lawsuit was dismissed with so many people having the same issue? I am one of them.

    1. Anil M. says:

Yes this is very poor design. Laptop functional but due to hinges broken issue cannot use anymore.

    2. Dale R Luy says:

Just today, 12/28/22 had to purchase a new computer as my 3.5 yr old HP had these problems starting at year 1.5 of ownership. Did NOT purchase a HP as looking at design it is still the same poor design. Computer still worked but could not move it as hinge was broken. Also like Melissa do not understand why suit would be dismissed.

  3. Douglas Krezan says:

    Mine also broke.

  4. Doug Krezan says:

I also have an HP that the hinge broke. These hinges are the worst design I have used in about forty years. HP should repair all of these computers.

  5. Ang says:

Are canadian residents able to join the class action suit in the states? Or should we start kne here?

  6. Ang says:

I bought an hp envy 360 a year and a half ago and a few months later the right hinge broke. I spent 150 to get it fixed and the repair person said the design was so cheap and that I shouldn’t move the screen at all, which is what it’s intended to do. I’ve been extremely careful with it and now tonight the other hinge broke. I am so frustrated and want compensation.

  7. Andria Simpson-Russell says:

I’ve purchased two laptops and my second one, HP Pavilion G7 2022US, is actually a replacement for a HP 15″ that petered out within a few months after purchase. I received my current one (G7 2022US) in 2012 and it’s worked fine until the hard drive crashed in about 2017 or 2018 so I upgraded the hard drive to a 1 TB and had Windows upgraded as well at Best Buy, once I received it back my G7 worked flawlessly! I saw NO problems with the laptop from case to the new operating system once it was returned. I rarely use it now so it stays closed on a laptop riser next to the bed on a small table so when I opened the cover one day imagine my surprise when I also heard a cracking sound at the left hinge and upon inspection at the corner near the hinge was separated and then part of the plastic where one screw is cracked and then popped out!? What the hell? I can open the lid about 3″ inches before the top left corner of the base starts to separate. I have NEVER had a problem like this before on other laptops or my other HP so I’m stumped and annoyed that I have seemingly wasted money TWICE, for the upgrades and the initial purchase, on a laptop that looks and runs brand new and now I can’t even open it. I’ve been considering replacing the hinges but if there’s a defect in the design and manufacturing should I bother? I can’t sell it if it won’t open and I refuse to pay another $200 plus to HP for a duct tape-type repair so now what?

  8. Jennifer M says:

I am also facing the same problem on the right side of my 17″ HP laptop

  9. Art Dyer says:

Yes! I’ve had the same issue. Left hinge has fallen apart and caused my screen to pop out on the corner. HP Pavilion purchased 2018.
HP never communicated this issue regarding this failure.

  10. Neffateenia says:

I purchased 2 HP 14″ laptops. One for my son and one for myself. “Both” of these laptops have the very same problem with the hinge. The hinge broke and I can’t close my laptop completely. Because of this, my laptop won’t keep a charge for long and the battery dies very quickly. When you spend money on a product this expensive, you expect to get good quality merchandise. And if any problems arise with your merchandise, you would expect a company such as HP to rectify the issues.
