Snapchat parent Snap Inc. announced a recall of 71,000 lithium-ion batteries used in its pocket-sized Pixy Flying Camera drones due to a fire hazard.

The Pixy batteries recall involves batteries sold separately for use with the Pixy, a 5-inch-long drone that can take pictures and videos. The recalled batteries are yellow in color, same as the drones, and are 3 inches long and a half-inch wide.

The Pixy Flying Camera drones and other Pixy accessories are also eligible for a refund separately.

The cameras were sold at Pixy.com and Amazon.com between May 2022 and December 2023, at prices ranging from $185 to $250 for the camera or flight pack bundle.

An extra charger and battery were sold for between $40 and $50, while a battery on its own was priced between $16 and $20.

Stop using Pixy lithium-ion batteries, visit Pixy.com for refund instructions

Snap received four reports of batteries overheating and bulging, resulting in one minor battery fire and one minor injury, before the company issued the lithium-ion batteries recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Snap asked customers to immediately stop using the Pixy Flying Camera drones and charging the lithium-ion batteries.

Customers should visit Pixy.com to participate in the Pixy batteries recall, receive a refund and receive instructions for disposing of lithium-ion batteries in accordance with local and state regulations. Pixy can be reached by phone at 800-269-6990 or by email at support@pixy.com.

Snap also must face 12 complaints from parents who claim their children died from fentanyl overdoses after purchasing drugs over Snapchat.
