Sales in the U.S. non-alcoholic adult beverage market increased by 31% to a total of $510 million over the past year, according to data released by analytics firm Nielsen IQ (NIQ).

The consumer intelligence company has attributed the increase in non-alcoholic adult beverage sales to a growing consumer desire to prioritize their wellness and moderate their drinking, according to Fox Business

Sales of non-alcoholic adult beverages were reportedly most prominent in January, according to NIQ, which found the drinks have become a holiday staple, including popular drinking holidays such as the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.

The report revealed more than 94% of consumers who purchase non-alcoholic adult beverages also buy alcoholic drinks, however, including beer, wine and spirits, reports Fox Business.

While sales for non-alcoholic adult beverages grew by double digits in all regions studied, the report found a total of 30% of sales reportedly came from five states, led in order by California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan and Ohio.

Non-alcoholic beer most popular non-alcoholic adult beverage, says report

Non-alcoholic beer was the most popular non-alcoholic adult beverage — making up 86.1% of market share — and was followed by wine, which accounted for the second most in market share with 11.2%, reports Fox Business.

Alcohol-free spirits accounted for the least market share with only 2.7% of sales. However, sales increased by 94% from a year ago, according to the report, which found sales for non-alcoholic vodka are up 528.1%.

NIQ found consumers are increasingly purchasing non-alcoholic adult beverages at restaurants and bars, with around 14% of patrons choosing non-alcoholic alternatives — a number which rises to 25% for consumers under the age of 35, reports Fox Business.

Consumers, meanwhile, reportedly said the main deciding factor for purchasing a non-alcoholic adult beverage is because they “like the flavor,” while the second most common reason was wanting to share in the drinking experience without consuming alcohol.

In other alcohol-related news, a class action lawsuit was filed against BC Kombucha in 2021 by a trio of Florida consumers who argued the company falsely advertised that its kombucha was non-alcoholic.
